Abstract This study investigated the relationship between various day care center climates and the childrens behavior at the centers. Children and adults were observed in three types of rearing climates: future-focused, present-focused, and combined, and three types of work climates: relaxed, strained and mixed. There were differences in the childrens pro-social and collaborative behaviors in centers with future-focused or combined rearing climates and relaxed work climates as compared to those in centers with present-focused rearing climate and strained work climate. The implications of rearing and work climates on childrens behavior are discussed.

Abstract This is the first part of a study that investigates organizational climates in different day care centers and behavior in those climates. Twelve centers were studied concerning patterns of (a) adult behavior towards children and (b) adult intentions, attitudes and norms regarding work and interpersonal relations. Patterns of adult behavior were described by three different center climates: Future-focused (adults actively together with the children, cooperated, talked, discussed, shared influence), Present-focused (adults passive relative to the children, hindered cooperation, gave orders and norms, talked a lot to each other), and Combined (a mix between future- and present-focused climates). We also described three patterns of adult attitudes and norms concerning interpersonal relations: Relaxed (relations were relaxed, positive view of challenge in work), Strained (relations were strained, the view of challenge in work was negative), and Mixed.

Advantages and disadvantages with datacollectors who came from different levels in the day-care organization were studied and also hindrances in the change process.
