Nelson S. Andres; Ram Prabhu Marimuthu; Yong-Kyun Eom; Bongchoon Jang

As an alternative for human inspection, presented in this study was the development of a machine vision inspection system (MVIS) purposely for car seat frames. The proposed MVIS was designed to meet the demands, features and specifications of car seat frame manufacturing companies in striving for increased throughput of better quality. This computer-based MVIS was designed to perform quality measures by detecting holes, nuts and welding spots on every car seat frame in real time and ensuring these portions are intact, precise and in proper place. In this study, the NI Vision Builder software for Automatic Inspection was used as a solution in configuring the aimed quality measurements. The proposed software has measurement techniques such as edge detecting and pattern-matching which are capable of identifying the boundaries or edges of an object and analyzing the pixel values along the profile to detect significant intensity changes. Either of these techniques is capable of gauging sizes, detecting missing portion and checking alignment of parts. The techniques for visual inspection were optimized through qualitative analysis and simulation of human tolerance on inspecting car seat frames. Furthermore, this study exemplified the incorporation of the optimized vision inspection environment to the pre-inspection and post-inspection subsystems. The optimized participation of human on this proposed MVIS for car seat frames has ideally eased to feeding and sorting.

A Study on SUV Parameters Sensitivity on Rollover Propensity

Ram Prabhu Marimuthu; Bongchoon Jang; Seung Jun Hong

The growing concern surrounding Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) rollover incidences and their consequences have prompted to investigate the sensitivity of critical vehicle parameters on rollover. In this paper, dynamic rollover simulation of Sports Utility Vehicles is carried out using a validated nonlinear vehicle model in Matlab/Simulink. A standard model is considered and critical vehicle parameters like CG height, track width and wheel base are varied within chosen specified limits to study its influence on roll behavior during Fishhook steering maneuver. A roll stability criterion based on two wheel lift off phenomenon is adopted for rollover propensity prediction. Further dynamic rollover characteristics of the vehicle are correlated with Static Stability Factor (SSF), Roll Stability Factor (RSF) and Two Wheel Lift off Velocity (TWLV). These findings will be of immense help to SUV chassis designers to determine safety limits of critical vehicle parameters and thus ensure better safety standards against SUV rollover.

Co-simulation and simulation integration for a full vehicle dynamic system

Bongchoon Jang; Gyoo-Jae Choi

The electric power steering (EPS) mechanism ensures improved vehicle safety and fuel economy. The development of a concurrent simulation technique and a simulation integration technique for analysing an EPS control system with a dynamic vehicle system is described in this paper. A full vehicle model interacting with an EPS control algorithm was concurrently simulated on a single-bump road condition. The dynamic responses of the vehicle chassis and the steering system resulting from impact with the road surface were evaluated and compared with experimental data obtained at the proving ground. Reasonable agreement was obtained for tie-rod load, rack displacement, steering wheel torque, and tyre centre acceleration. The concurrent simulation capability was employed for EPS performance evaluation and calibration as well as for vehicle-handling performance integration and synthesis.

Study on Concurrent Simulation Technique of Matlab CMDPS and A CarSim Base Full Car Model

Bongchoon Jang

The Column type Motor Driven Power Steering(CMDPS) systems are generally equipped among passenger vehicles ensuring better vehicle safety and fuel economy. In general to analyze systems and to develop a controller a full vehicle model from CarSim developed by Mechanical Simulation Incorporation interacting with MDPS control algorithm from Matlab Simulink was concurrently simulated. This paper describes the development of concurrent simulation technique in detail for analyzing Matlab Simulink MDPS control system with a dynamic vehicle system because the specific method has not been revealed in detail. The steering wheel angle input was evaluated and well compared with proving ground experimental data. The comparisons from concurrent simulation show an effective way to develop and validate the control algorithm. This concurrent simulation capability will be efficiently used for CMDPS performance evaluation and logic tuning as well as for vehicle handling performance.

Nelson S. Andres; Bongchoon Jang

Meeting the growing demand deadlines, reducing the production cost and upgrading the quality control measurements are the reasons why the automotive part manufacturers are venturing into automation. Attaining these objectives is impossible with human inspection for many reasons. Accordingly, the introduction of machine vision system purposely for car seat frame inspection is presented in this study as an alternative for human inspection. This proposal is designed to meet the demands, features and specifications of car seat frame manufacturing companies in striving for increased throughput of better quality. More specifically, this computer-based inspection proposal is designed to perform quality measures to detect holes, nuts and welding spots on every car seat fiame in real time and ensuring these portions to be intact, precise and in proper place. In this study, the NI Vision Builder software for Automatic Inspection is used as a solution in configuring the aimed quality measurements. These quality measurement techniques for visual inspection are optimized through qualitative analysis and simulation of human tolerance on inspecting car seat frames. Furthermore, this study exemplifies the incorporation of the optimized vision inspection environment to the pre-inspection and post-inspection phases using LabVIEW software.

Development of U-shaped Metal Bellows design software based on MATLAB

Bongchoon Jang; Sung-Chul Kim

Abstract Bellows product is an important part in the area of plant engineering, shipbuilding and petrochemistry. For safety and durability it is necessary to consider lots of factors when designing it. This research developed a U-shapedmetal bellows design software based on EJMA 9th Edition manual. This GUI software was developed by using Matlabsoftware and can be able to design four types of bellows, Unreinforced Single Bellows, Unreinforced Double Bellows,Reinforced Single Bellows and Reinforced Double Bellows. The already proven bellows model was designed to verifythis software. We investigated the behavior while changing the thickness of the bellows. As the thickness of bellows increases, spring rate, thrust force, stress increase and fatigue life decreases. This software will be helpful design engineers save time and effort. Key Words : Bellows, EJMA, Fatigue Life, Matlab GUI, Stress 본 연구는 중소기업청에서 지원하는 2014년도 산학연공동기술개발사업(No. C01813260100413545)의 연구수행으로 인한 결과물임을 밝힙니다. * Corresponding Author : BongChoon Jang(Andong National Univ.)Tel: +82-10-5132-4081 email: [email protected] December 10, 2014Accepted April 9, 2015Revised (1st February 17, 2015, 2nd March 20, 2015)Published April 30, 2015

MDPS Analysis Software Development

Bongchoon Jang; Joung-Hoon Kim; Sungmo Yang

Complete novel software for MDPS for the simulation and analysis is proposed for steering engineers. The software, MSAS, which can provide the functionality for MDPS Simulation, Analysis & Synthesis, is based on the steering system model, vehicle model and control logic. As the suppliers provide the control logic as a black box, this software is capable of using any type of black box logic or white box control logic that can be developed by logic designers. In addition, this software will be synthesized with the suppliers’ s-function control logic and RMDPS together.

Development of The Bean Threshing System using Independent Driving

Bongchoon Jang; Sung-Chul Kim

This purpose of this research is to build up a prototype of bean threshing machine after three dimensional design which can be driven independently by engine and hydraulic equipments and wheels. To accomplish the functionality of bean threshing machine the cutters are placed in a swirl type on a threshing drum the thresing capability would be improved. Also a exit pipe was designed to clear the remains to solve the past problems that the normal machines had. A fan was designed to blow to send the waste only to the outside. Only clean beans will be transferred through a blowing fan wind power to exit pipe and the system was designed to help the worker to collect the beans in front of the machine. This threshing machine using independent driving engine which can provide the power to drive the system and do the threshing is the first developed technology in domestic area through the University and Industry cooperation.
