Abstract As designers transition from traditional HCI practice to experience design, they need new methods that connect experience theories to design practice. Research on product attachment – detailing why people love their stuff – indicates that attachment develops as people use products to discover who they are and desire to be. This finding hints at a design opportunity for products that support social role transition, when people must invent themselves in a new role. In advancing experience design, the authors chose to connect the theory on product attachment to design practice by developing two new design methods. They began a pilot project to design applications that could support first-year college students as they shed their high school identities to become college students. This paper documents the development of these methods, detailing the authors’ application of these in a pilot study. In addition, it shares the authors’ reflections on the effectiveness of these methods and on the larger issu...

Abstract This paper proposes technical solutions to collect, record, and track health vaccination records for children in a developing world context. The problem we address in this paper is very important, and often underappreciated. Our solution consists of two elements: bracelets containing NFC tags (intended to be worn by the children), and NFC enabled Android smartphones (intended to be used by the doctors) in order to manage the vaccine information contained within the bracelets. We use a tattoo design inspired by ethnography for our prototype of the NFC enabled bracelet. The visual representation of the tattoo is printed on the bracelet surface. It conveys an overall picture of the current vaccination status. Furthermore, the tattoo is the central element of the user interface of the Android App that allows the doctors to access, read, and update more detailed information about the childs vaccination status.

To a Graphical User Interface (GUI) designer, typeface design used to mean creating text that would deliver information to users in the most effective way. In typography, however, moveable type has evolved beyond being a simple means to deliver messages. In fact, typefaces must now accommodate individual users’ preferences and tastes by also serving as an image information system. An interface that can satisfy the basic needs for reading and also provide aesthetic pleasure is now available through typography. Typography transforms the interior system of language into a visual imagery system. Additionally, future adoption of kinetic typography within GUIs will enable interaction with users and set a new stage for the evolution of operating systems. In other words, the interface is considered a living being that evolves alongside mobile devices as a computer application. The objective of this study is twofold. First, we examine the role of typography in the process of configuring user identity and interactive interface design strategies that provide users with a pleasurable experience. We define brand involvement as a variable that may affect typography preferences. We suggest incorporating a verification process in the GUI that allows experimentation with various user preferences. Second, this study attempts to examine the problem of distortion, which occurs when trying to evaluate users’ emotional needs concerning device preferences, and the association between evaluation processes and changes in user preferences. To meet these objectives, the concept of brand involvement is used as an important measurement parameter.

This research aims to explore the concept of gaze reactive typography, in which the design changes dynamically according to how audiences view it. Inspired by the philosophy and styles of the famous Korean typographer Ahn Sang-Soo, we created an installation to showcase and exemplify relationships in four different levels between viewing behaviors and dynamic representations of typography.

This study suggests the need of ‘policy design’ that aims to develop visual contents with competitiveness in a global market by comparing and analyzing the programs of promoting the visual content industry of each local government. Moreover it focuses to derive a policy implication so that the local government in its role could develop and promote programs of the industry to enhance its competitiveness. The scope of the study covers local governments of the national capital region and the five metropolitan cities of Korea. The support programs on the visual content industry have been compared and analyzed in 2012. A case study of the policy program of the UK, USA and France has been conducted. In conclusion, we must recognize visual industry as regional strategic industry. The policy orientation, organizations and the scale of support should be designed to make the most of regional characteristics and lead to sustainable growth in response to a rapidly changing IT convergence technology and the new digital environment.
