Intelligent tutoring systems for language learning

Vanja Slavuj; Bozidar Kovacic; Igor Jugo

Intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) are able to provide a personalized approach to learning by assuming the role of a real teacher/expert who adapts and steers the learning process according to the specific needs of each learner. This is done by taking into account a number of learner features and deciding on the best action to follow at any point in the learning process. Within the field of computer assisted language learning (CALL), the “computer-as-a-tutor” modality has been widely accepted for some time now, although it has long been overshadowed by the “computer-as-a-tool” modality. This was mainly due to the observable lack of interactivity of language learning systems and the inability of technology to show “intelligence”. However, the development of artificial intelligence in general, and natural language processing, user modeling and ITSs in particular, gave impetus for the development of the field referred to as intelligent CALL (ICALL). The paper at hand outlines and briefly discusses the issues surrounding the development and use of ITSs for language learning, taking also into account the broader context of (I)CALL, and gives an overview of such systems already in use.

Organization of tax data warehouse for legal entities

Miodrag Sretenovic; Bozidar Kovacic; Vladan Jovanovic

Legal entities information systems for tracking tax changes belong to the group of business office information systems, which provide answers to the user requirements on the monitoring of tax changes. By its structure, such information system represents only one segment of the overall legal entities information system, but despite this it has a central role in reporting to the Tax authorities and it represents the link between legal entities and the Tax authorities. This paper describes a model for storing tax data that has been implemented in practical business applications. Furthermore it describes the process of building and organization of the data warehouse and implemented ETL process for the extraction, cleansing and transformation of data in a multidimensional model of tax data warehouses, which is based on the metadata model and model of the set of legal rules. In addition it states a concept and basic methods used in the development of business intelligence systems for the construction and use of a warehouse and it gives guidelines for future development. Model warehouse tax information forms the basis for the execution of various analysis for decision making. Formalizing the process performance analysis directly affects the quality of business intelligence.

Personal learning environment as support to education

Bojan Grba; Bozidar Kovacic

The methodologists cognitions achieved by experience in education resulted in the fact that the centre of education must be transferred from a teacher to a student. The result of such an approach is the development of personal environment for learning. Former generations of the learning system by which introduction of information technology is introduced into educational process points to the need for introduction of individual approach to learning by development of personal environment for learning. The results of the most important researches implemented at the European universities are presented. Current leading systems for the development of personal environment for learning and tools for creation of personal environment for learning are described. The directions of development of educational environment and guidelines for future researches are established.

The platform for the content exchange between Internet music streaming services and discographers

Miodrag Sretenovic; Bozidar Kovacic; Aleksandar Skendzic

Internet streaming is the type of technology that allows simultaneous reception of multimedia content and its simultaneous playback through a computer network. Global development of the Internet leads to growing demand for multimedia content. Discographers deal in distribution and sale of rights to play audio recordings (tracks), adapting their business to new technologies and modern ways of selling their products and services in order to survive in the market impacted by a large drop in demand and sales of CDs and DVDs. In the process of rationalization and automation of business processes, new standards in the electronic exchange of data are set between discographers and Internet streaming services with the goal to increase efficiency and economy. This paper describes a platform for the exchange of data and content, presents the concept and the basic methods used in the development of an automated system for the exchange of data and content between discographers and Internet streaming services and offers guidelines for future development.

E-learning on Polytechnic Nikola Tesla — Analysis and comparison

Bozidar Kovacic; Aleksandar Skendzic; Devcic Kristina

E-learning System has become a common constituent unit of web page of any higher education institution. At the Polytechnic Nikola Tesla in Gospic Loomen is established since 2010, a system that is designed in a role of teaching repository for students and for preparation of e-courses for the teachers and students. The aim of this paper is by using descriptive and inferential statistics, and based on a survey conducted among students, examine how, and to what purpose and how often students used Loomen E-learning System.

Development of the data warehouse model for public authorities accounts in Croatia

Miodrag Sretenovic; Bozidar Kovacic; Vladan Jovanovic

An ongoing process of modernization, rationalization and implementation of public administration reform, in order to increase efficiency and economy, would be infeasible without improvement and continuous investments in new information technology. The main task of public administration is to be a service to citizens and legal entities from their domain. With the purpose of improving its functions, public authorities must have complete information in order to increase the quality and speed of information exchange with all stakeholders in the process. This paper describes a model of data storage. It describes the process of building and organization of data warehouse and ETL process of extracting, cleansing and transformation of data in a multidimensional data warehouse model, which is based on the metadata model. Furthermore it describes a concept and basic methods used in the development of business intelligence systems for the construction and use of a data warehouse. In addition it states options for the analysis of the data in the warehouse, which are shown based on dimensional storage concept, and it gives guidelines for future development.

Security analysis of wireless network access following 802.11 standard in educational institutions of the Republic of Croatia

Aleksandar Skendzic; Bozidar Kovacic

Security of wireless networks is lower than the security of wired networks and it remains he greatest security risk of a local network. This is primarily due to the communication medium (air), which is accessible in a specific radius of action as well as the inadequate use wireless network protective mechanisms. Besides, administrators of wireless networks usually respond to damage caused by a system security breach only after it had already happened. The aim of this research is an evaluation of the safety parameters that affect the security of wireless networks. For this purpose a questionnaire was designed to test the expertise in educational institutions in the Republic of Croatia: CARNet system engineers will evaluate the parameters that affect the security of local WLAN. The collected data show individual evaluation of wireless network security parameters that affect the WIFI security. The results will be used for recommended safety guidelines.
