and the two digital hearing aids! Ever since this research was first presented, we’ve all shuddered at the thought of what USA Today headline these findings might generate. However, my primary reason for selecting this paper is that it nicely illustrates how we can compare different types of hearing aid technology using a research design that does not have an a priori winner. I liked the design of the study, as the authors conducted testing for both clinical and real-world settings and assessed intelligibility, quality, and ease of listening. You’ll have to read the article to see which technology won.

S the best articles of 1999 in diagnostic audiology was no easy task. Many of the 107 articles that I reviewed in a number of journals deserve commendation for the importance of their contribution. However, my assignment was to choose only the very best in each of five categories. So, with great difficulty, I narrowed the choice down to the articles described below.
