The potassium graphite reduction of R‘BBr3 (R‘ = :C{N(2,4,6-Me3C6H2)CH}2) in Et2O led to the isolation of 3 (R‘(H)BB(H)R‘) and 4 (R‘(H)2B−B(H)2R‘), with BB double and B−B single bonds, respectively. These compounds were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, 1H and 11B NMR, and elemental analyses. Neutral diborene 3 exhibits polymorphic planar (3a), twisted (3b), and trans-bent (3c) geometries in the solid state.

Potassium graphite reduction of L:Ga(Mes)Cl(2) [L: = :C{(i-Pr)NC(Me)}(2), Mes = 2,4,6-Me(3)C(6)H(2)] (1) in hexane yields the organogallium dimer L:(Mes)(Cl)Ga-Ga(Cl)(Mes):L (2), while potassium reduction of 1 in toluene affords the neutral aromatic Ga(6) octahedron L:Ga[Ga(4)Mes(4)]Ga:L (3).

Sodium metal reduction of RECl2 (E = Ga, In; R = –C6H3-2,6-(2,4,6-i-Pr3C6H2)2) with Cp2HfCl2 gives Cp2Hf(ER)2 compounds, which represent the first Hf–E bonds.

Reaction of lead(II) chloride with biphenylmagnesium bromide yields Bp(3)Pb-PbBp(3) and [(THF)(3)Mg(mu-Cl)(3)Mg(THF)(3)][Pb(PbBp(3))(3)](Bp = biphenyl), which, upon single crystal X-ray crystallographic analysis, reveals an interesting variation of Pb-Pb bond distances.

The title compound, Cp2TiR (Cp=C5H5; R=2,6-(4-MeC6H4)2C6H3), 1, was prepared by reaction of RLi with [Cp2TiCl]2. Compound 1 was characterized by elemental analysis, EPR, and single crystal X-ray crystallography. The title compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with the following unit cell dimensions: a=11.1466(7) Å, b=16.4429(11) Å, c=13.0786(8) Å; b=106.2040(10)°;V=2301.9(3) Å3. The EPR spectrum of 1 displays two signals, a high field signal at g=1.979 and a lower field signal at g=1.959. Significantly, 1 is a sterically encumbered m-terphenyl-stabilized trivalent titanocene paramagnetic complex and may be a practical one-electron reducing reagent.
