The future of hotel chains Branded marketplaces driven by the sharing economy

Brendan Richard; Shane Cleveland

Over the past few years the sharing economy has grown tremendously, disrupting the traditional tourism industry via the mass deployment of exponentially increasing capacity. In this new economy, ownership and access are shared by individuals creating, broadcasting and exchanging their own products and services. Rather than compete against the sharing economy, hotel chains have the opportunity to oversee this communal sharing and leverage the strength of their brands by extending them to peer-to-peer (P2P) rentals. This potential future of P2P rentals offers an attractive option for guests looking for a unique stay free of the current uncertainty of the informal economy in safety, legality and quality. This paper introduces propositions regarding the future state of the P2P rental market, presents a scenario detailing branded marketplaces, discusses the drivers of change, explores branding considerations and offers recommendations for future research.

Crowdsourcing in the Lodging Industry: Innovation on a Budget

Brendan Richard; William P. Perry; Robert C. Ford

The lodging industry, with high capital costs and low margins, leaves little room for the cost of innovation. Since the typical chain hotel operates through a partnership of up to four stakeholders, consisting of the brand, the management firm, the hotel owner, and the land owner, identifying who is responsible for initiating innovative practices and ideas is problematic. Institutional ownership generally focus on maximizing returns to investors. These uses of funds leave little or no money to invest in innovation. Where does this leave the potential for innovation? The lodging industry is in need of an innovation technique that has the potential to provide implementable results faster and cheaper. The authors propose that this innovation technique is crowdsourcing. This chapter provides the readers with: an overview of innovation in the lodging industry and its impediments, strategies to overcome these impediments, a rationale for why crowdsourcing is an appropriate innovation technique, a crowdsourcing framework with examples of solutions for the industry, and the managerial implications of pursuing a crowdsourced strategy.

Critical Friends Groups: Moving beyond Mentoring

Valerie A. Storey; Brendan Richard

Since 2001, many scholars (Jackson & Kelley, 2002; Shulman, 2005; Murphy, 2006; Walker, Golde, Jones, Bueschel, & Hutchins, 2008) have been urging schools of education to take on the demanding task of developing a distinct Professional Practice Doctorate that provides demanding, rigorous, respectable, high-level academic experience to prepare students for service as leading practitioners in the field of education (Shulman, Golde, Bueschel, & Garabedian, 2006). Shulman et al. challenged members of the Council of Deans from Research Education Institutions (CADREI) to think about how schools of education could unite to reclaim the EdD (Perry, 2012).

The role of critical friends in supporting institutional change

Valerie A. Storey; Brendan Richard

Purpose – Over the course of three years (2010-2013), the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED; a Consortium of 86 colleges and schools of education) Phase I institutions were involved in the Fund for the Improvement of Secondary Education mixed-methods, multi-case study. Data were collected from Primary Investigators, and stakeholders involved in the (re) design of a professional practice doctorate in education. At the conclusion of the research study, each institution was the recipient of a Critical Friends (CFs) Response Report. The purpose of this paper is to provide insights into the effectiveness of CFs in supporting institutional change by developing a collaborative environment in Higher Education. Design/methodology/approach – First, the role of CFs, and Critical Friend Group (CFG) protocol is described. Second, analyzed data from CF Response Reports is reviewed. Lastly, recommendations for the application of the conceptual framing of CFs within the academy are discussed. Findings – C...

Tourism and citizenship: rights, freedoms and responsibilities in the global order

Laura Altin; Brendan Richard; Janika Raun

TDCS concept. The following chapter explains the evolution of the central government and local governments’ roles in tourism and the transfer of resources to private industry. The historical perspective of the role of governments in tourism development presented in this chapter is critical to understanding tourism development in China. The last chapter in this section discusses the results of a study of resident attitudes toward MICE tourism. The final section of the book describes tourism planning research and practice in China. The editor’s opening chapter proposes that the Chinese government dominates the tourism planning agenda which is driven by pragmatic regional development needs resulting in a product-oriented approach. However, mention is made of the communitydriven development model (CDD) of rural tourism that has been adopted in some cases. The editors recommend three planning principles for the CDD model. This segment of the book presents new perspectives of Chinese tourism planning that have hitherto been absent from the literature. For example, the first chapter by Hu describes a case study that demonstrates the integration of peripheral environment into the core tourist attraction and the complexity of interdepartmental coordination. In the following chapter, Wong and Ryan exemplify the planning implications in cases where both spiritual and secular concerns must be balanced. Next, Wen presents a conceptual model with 10 development factors that influence the formation of an iconic attraction. The results of a longitudinal study of resident attitudes towards tourism are discussed in the last chapter. Based on the results of the study, the authors offer implications relating to heritage preservation and social equity in the tourism development planning process. The book, Tourism in China, advances knowledge of tourism development issues, concerns, successes and failures. It is a must read for all who seek to enrich their understanding of tourism development not only in China but also in a general sense. The content in each chapter is compelling and provides new perspectives forWestern researchers.
