ABSTRACT The development of self‐managing schools over the last seven years has created new management development needs for headteachers. Combining the educational leader and institutional manager role is the challenge facing every headteacher. One of the forms of development available to headteachers is the traditional Business MBA or one of the burgeoning number of Education Management MBAs. It could be argued that while the former are inappropriate for the school sector many of the latter merely consist of a ‘re‐badged’ MA, MEd or MSc in Education Management. This article outlines how a radical new development avoids either of these approaches and creates a competency based strategic management vehicle that meets the current needs of headteachers.
