The Impacts of Risk on Deploying and Sustaining Lean Six Sigma Initiatives

Mohamad Amin Kaviani; Brian J. Galli

Continuous improvement is used to enhance productivity and customer value. However, throughout the years, its efficacy dwindled. Thus, a hybrid methodology known as Lean Six Sigma was developed. It combines Lean and Six Sigma in a continuous improvement effort to address most challenges organizations face. However, risks are associated with deployment and implementation of Lean Six Sigma in differing organizations. Lean Six Sigma uses DMAIC to evaluate and measure efficacy. Successful execution of Lean practices depends on effective project management, support, and commitment from top management, employees, and stakeholders. An organization must be willing to change existing corporate culture, empower employees, and hire trained personnel to experience the benefits of Lean Six Sigma. This paper discusses results from implementing this hybrid methodology, including improved productivity, quality, and customer satisfaction. This paper concludes that Lean Six Sigma is an effective approach for any organization to use to ascertain continuous improvement.

Shared Leadership and Key Innovation Indicators in Six Sigma Projects

Brian J. Galli; Mohamad Amin Kaviani; Eleonora Bottani; Teresa Murino

This research establishes the relationship(s) that shared leadership has with two performance metrics in Six Sigma healthcare teams: the perceived effectiveness of a team completing assigned project deliverables and satisfying customer requirements. Another primary goal is to comprehend additional factors affecting the three analyzed variables. The study found that the degree of shared leadership displayed at any Six Sigma project phase is dependent on the deliverables complexity and degree of change management complexity. Throughout this research, the role of shared leadership cannot be stressed enough. This variable yield influence and relationships with several factors, including change management and decision-making. In turn, they impact a teams environment and ability to effectively complete a project. Understanding the impact and relationship(s) that shared leadership has on quality improvement projects can provide an organization with several benefits, such as improved ability to complete projects efficiently and with quality. Finally, this study builds practical knowledge by outlining implications to professionals, managers, and teams for decision-making, change management, leadership development, Six Sigma training, and external coaching.

An environment that fosters shared leadership and the effects on engineering education: An analysis and proposed structure

Brian J. Galli; Ray Luechtefeld

Engineers must not only have design and technical skills, they must also possess the ability to work in and lead teams, adopt and adapt to change, and act as leaders who can think in terms of the bigger picture. To develop these skills, engineering students must be actively involved in their education and trained to continually learn. Many engineering students have become accustomed to traditional forms of education, which can lead to passivity and dependence on faculty to tell them what to know and why they need to know it. Research in organizational behavior suggests a solution can lie in modifying the traditional learning environment by moving to an organizational structure based on shared leadership. This paper explores the concept of shared leadership in engineering education and describes specific structures that have been used in courses to develop shared leadership among engineering students, as well as outcomes of these structures.

GPS Patents and Their Effects on Our Future and Rights

Chloé Salome Margulis; Brian J. Galli

The interest in GPS technology has led to the filing of many GPS patents. Although not all the filed patents result in the production of final products, there has been a rise in the question of GPS Technology and its ethical values in relation to privacy, rights, and government surveillance. Aside from covering the above issue, this paper will also discuss the branching of from GPS technology, development, and ethical implications to GIS mapping and RFID tagging in modern society. The main dilemma addressed will focus on the legality of taking peoples locations in patented applications, devices, and programs, and using them for various needs, whether the user is aware or unaware of this. Will this be considered an infringement on personal rights and liberties, specifically pertaining to the Fourth Amendment?

HRM's importance throughout the organization: analyzed through the concepts and views portrayed in eli goldratt’s the goal

Brian J. Galli

This paper analyzes the important of human resources management (HRM) to attain organizational goals and objectives. Without the existence of HRM in any organization, whether big or small, an organization will face difficulties in achieving its goals, but also harnessing all the attributes and strength of its workforce. This paper makes several suggestions as to what organizations ought to do regarding HRM and better managing its employees to reach upmost success. The paper analyzes the concepts and discussions in Eli Goldratts book entitled The Goal to conclude how HRM, accompanied by the theory of constraints and lean quality can help an organization achieve all its goals.

Application of Conjoint Analysis in Improving the Value of New Product Development: A Hotel Case Study Analysis

Brian J. Galli; Mohamad Amin Kaviani; Paula Steisel Goldfarb; Ardeshir Shahmaei

One of the most important elements of economic and business activity is developing a strategic marketing plan to improve growth prospects. One of the most important aspects of this in marketing is to understand the behavioral patterns of customers, in order to meet their needs and achieve business objectives. The consumer behavior analysis is key to establish the level of preferences expressed by the consumer towards a product or service. For this reason, conjoint analysis (CA) is one of the main models in the field of consumer research. This paper identifies the usefulness of CA as a marketing strategy in new product development (NPD). An application to “Forte Hotel Design†(presented by Lilien and Rangaswamy, 2004) is developed to highlight how CA can be an effective tool for marketing new products/services. Forte Hotels is a European hotel chain that wants to open a new facility in the United States. This research demostrates that there are multiple ways to conduct marketing research for any product or service. While the Forte Hotel case study used segmentation and targeting tools in its original analysis, the study shows that CA can also be used to analyze this marketing problem and can lead to similar decisions. This study highlights the value of CA as a tool to evaluate product attributes and shows its value in helping to make marketing decisions. It also shows that there is more than one way to dissect a marketing problem. The original case was solved using segmentation and targeting marketing tools, but this study shows that CA can be used to effectively make marketing decisions on new product development that lead to the same results/decisions as other marketing tools. This study shows original ways of using CA, to dissect a service design problem in new product development and to facilitate both product management and project management.
