Jena: a semantic Web toolkit

HP Labs developed the Jena toolkit to make it easier to develop applications that use the semantic Web information model and languages. Jena is a Java application programming interface that is available as an open-source download from www.hpl.hp.com/semweb/jena-top.html.

The Resource Description Framework (RDF) and its Vocabulary Description Language RDFS

An informal introduction to the W3C’s updated Resource Description Framework (RDF) and its vocabulary description language is given. RDF’s role in the semantic web and its relationship to other semantic web languages is described. The basic concepts of RDF and RDF Schema are explained and an example RDF schema is given. Limitations of RDF are described.

Four Steps Towards the Widespread Adoption of a Semantic Web

This paper suggests four steps towards the realization of a semantic web. Promotion of the idea should be based on practical application. There is need for the immediate development of practical demonstration applications. Simplicity and tolerance of error should be prime targets of research and development. An Open Source project to develop and populate a framework of tools and applications should be started.
