Most countries around the world now favor stable macro-economic management, outward-oriented trade and investment policies, and an increased role for markets and the private sector. This paper explores the dominant capitalism paradigm and its recent effects on globalization and on the reliance on economic achievements. It also raises questions about the legitimacy of the global pattern of development and investigates the compatibility of new concepts such as sustainable development and old ones such as maximizing economic growth.

ABSTRACT This article deals with the multiple links between the social, economic and political challenges at issue with globalization, which has unfolded in an unequal and fragmented way. We suggest that the response to these challenges is a global governance, which needs beyond the discourses, to ensure that human development is the hard core of all strategies for action. We focus on the contribution eventually provided by multinational firms, governments and international institutions, as well as by the civil society, in developing new policies that aim at a better integration of all countries and societies in the global economy.

ABSTRACT The aim of this article is to synthesize and emphasize the common themes that are found in the articles presented in this special issue of the Journal. Some issues, such as violence against women, are not usually, or at least seldom, discussed in the development literature. When we look at the socio-cultural environment of women and at the present institutions, we wonder about the meaning of sustainable development. To achieve such a goal would require a change in the way we view development, especially in regard to the place and role of women in the development process at all levels: local, national and international.

ABSTRACT India has chosen a system of mixed economy with a particular emphasis on a socialistic pattern of development. Although the Indian system is the result of state-initiated, state-controlled planning, growth opportunities exist for private industry. The main objective of Indian five year plans is the abolition of poverty and unemployment and as such, priority is given to the development of basic industry. A discussion of different plans is presented from a historical perspective to determine the extent to which this objective has been achieved.
