Effectiveness Of 2% And 4% Papain Gels In The Healing Of Venous Ulcers

Andréa Pinto Leite Ribeiro; Beatriz Guitton Renaud Baptista de Oliveira; Marja Ferreira Soares; Bruna Maiara Ferreira Barreto; Débora Omena Futuro; Selma Rodrigues de Castilho

OBJECTIVE To analyze the effectiveness of 2% and 4% papain gels in tissue repair of venous ulcers. METHOD Quasi-experimental study with consecutive sample of 16 patients with 30 venous ulcers treated at the outpatient clinic of a teaching hospital, from April to November in 2011, using a form for clinical assessment of the patient and its lesion. Variables were analyzed by Wilcoxon and McNemar test (p < 0.05). RESULTS Most participants were female; aged between 51 and 59 years; obese; with hypertension. Regarding ulcers, there was an average decrease of 7.9 cm2 (50% of its original size) in 90 days; 20% of the ulcers completely healed within 56.67 days. There was an increase in epithelialization, significant reduction in the slough and edema, improved depth, in the type and amount of exudate (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION 2% and 4% papain gels were effective in healing venous ulcers.OBJECTIVE To analyze the effectiveness of 2% and 4% papain gels in tissue repair of venous ulcers. Aim: To make an integrative review to examine the scientific evidences relating to the identification of microorganisms commonly isolated in contaminated tissular lesions and the main products used on them. Method: This is an integrative review originating from the search with the descriptors Leg ulcer, infection, bacteria and Nursing, in the databases LILACS, IBECS, MEDLINE, Cochrane and SciELO, including articles published between 2003 and 2013. Results: A total of 14 articles were selected, of which seven were observational and the other seven were experimental studies. Discussion: Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were the most prevalent microorganisms in the evaluated tissular lesions, followed by Enterobacter, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Acinetobacter. The main products used were silver alginate, silver sulfadiazine, ultraviolet light and papain, which are effective in reducing the bacterial load of infected injuries. Conclusion: The early identification of the presence of microorganisms in lesions allows the decision in terms of the appropriate propaedeutics to be performed.

Bruna Maiara Ferreira Barreto; Fernanda Soares Pessanha; Beatriz Guitton Renaud Baptista de Oliveira; Lenise Arneiro Teixeira; Geraldo Renato de Paula; Ana Clara Silveira Marques

The presence of infection in the wound delays the healing process. The main isolated micro-organisms are Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Aim: To analyze the phenotypic and genotypic profile of Staphylococcus aureus strains in chronic lesions of outpatients treated with 2% hydrogel or polyurethane. Such analysis will support the decision with regard to the appropriate treatment and ensure greater speed in the tissue repair process. Method: this is a descriptive study that uses a quantitative approach. It is carried out through clinical specimen collection of lesions by swab, involving bacterial culture, identification and molecular characterization.
