Dioctophyma renale infection in dogs is being considered uncommon for most parts of the world. However, some regions show an increase of this infection; but many data of the epidemiology and the biological cycle of the parasite are still unclear. The present study describes the epidemiological, clinicpathological and ultrasonographic aspects of 28 cases of infection by Dioctophyma renale in dogs in the West Frontier region of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Street dogs were the most affected and all of them had access to the banks of the Uruguay River. The renal and extra-renal lesions were predominantly characterized by atrophy of the renal parenchyma, sclerotic glomerulonephritis and granulomatous peritonitis, associated with free adult parasites and eggs in the abdominal cavity and erratic migration into the subcutaneous tissue. The ultrasound findings corresponded especially to the circular cross-sectional images with 0.6cm in diameter at most, with hyperechoic margin and hypoechoic center too. These findings were pathognomonic for Dioctophyma renale infection and this examination was essential for the definitive diagnosis by clinical evaluation. The results of the study demonstrate the importance of this parasitism in the region, alert that the diagnosis has being underestimated, and point out the need to clarify its epidemiology in order to reach effective control measures.

Spontaneous envenoming by snake bite is described as a cause of death in domestic animals. However, there are just few information about the species of snake involved, course, and clinicopathological and laboratory findings. Thus, this research aimed to determine the clinicopathological and laboratory changes induced by Bothrops moojeni and Bothropoides neuwiedi snake venoms in sheep, in order to provide additional information regarding snakebites in farm animals and to help establish the diagnosis of this condition. The lyophilized snake venoms were dissolved in 1mL saline solution and administered subcutaneously into the right face of four sheep, at doses of 0.41mg/kg and 0.82mg/kg of B. moojeni venom for two sheep, and 1.0mg/kg of B. neuwiedi venom for two other sheep. Only the sheep which had received the lowest dose (0.41mg/kg) survived, but developed severe clinical signs, similar to the others. First clinical signs were observed about 10 minutes after inoculation in all sheep. The course varied from 2 to 4 days. The clinical findings in all sheep were characterized by apathy, marked swelling of the face, the ventral neck and esternal region, and mild swelling of the proximal portion of the forelimbs, as well as increased bleeding time, tachycardia, pale mucous membranes, and large quantity of undigested blood in the intestinal lumen. Laboratory exams showed mainly a reduction in serum protein and increased creatine kinase in all sheep. At necropsy, extensive hematomas were observed in the subcutaneous tissue of the swollen areas. Also petechiae, bruises and mild to moderate hemorrhagic suffusions on the serosa of various organs, and blood within the intestinal contents of the distal rectum were observed. In addition to hemorrhages, the main histopathological changes were necrosis of skeletal muscle fibers and blood vessel walls next to the inoculation site. The swollen areas on face, neck, sternum and limbs of the sheep were due the hematomas.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of joint fusion and bone formation in dogs undergoing atlantoaxial arthrodesis after removal of articular cartilage associated or not to implant homogenous or autogenous cancellous bone. Twelve dogs, weighing between 8 and 12kg were randomly divided into three groups. Group I (GI) performed only the removal of joint cartilage and joint immobilization with acrylic resin and pins. Group II (GII): after removel of joint cartilage and articular immobilization was performed modeling and placement of homogenous cancellous bone at the given location. The volume of homograft placed in the joint was measured using a precision balance and all animals received the same amount. Group III (GIII): this was the same procedure as GI, however, was used autogenous cancellous bone graft at the given location. Radiographic examinations were performed on all animals at 30, 60 and 90 days postoperatively. At 90 days of PO was carried out euthanasia of animals for testing of manual palpation and CT evaluation and histological. Samples were kept in solution in 10% buffered formaldehyde for fixation for a minimum of 72 hours and after, decalcified in formic acid and sodium citrate for subsequent processing and included in paraffin. Sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin for light microscopy evaluation. Statistical analysis of the association between the degree of joint fusion assessed by manual palpation, the digitized radiographic images and CT scans and treatment groups, we applied the Chi-square test of independence. The test results were evaluated by the exact significance and considered statistically significant at 5% significance (P<0.05). By manual palpation test and by the CT images can be seen that there was no statistically significant difference between groups at 90 days postoperatively. Radiographic analysis of the atlantoaxial joint showed that the degree of fusion was similar among treatments, no statistical difference at 30, 60 and 90 days postoperatively. Regarding the histopathological study of atlantoaxial joint of dogs after 90 days postoperatively was found that bone formation in group I had 25% of each intensity (absent, mild, moderate, severe) in group II, 75% lighter and 25% sharp and in group III, 25% moderate and 75% severe. It can be concluded that the use of graft homogenous preserved in 98% glycerin in dogs undergoing atlantoaxial fusion method is a viable alternative for treatment of atlantoaxial instability. There is no difference in the degree of joint fusion and bone formation when the technique of atlantoaxial arthrodesis in dogs is associated with autogenous cancellous bone graft or implant homogenous. The removal of articular cartilage alone is an effective and shows similar results to the use of autograft or homogenous implant.

Cerdocyon thous (crab-eating fox) is the most common wild canid in South American territory. The aim of this paper was to describe macroscopic, microscopic and comparative morphology of the larynx of this species. Analyses of larynges of sixteen specimens (four males and twelve females) revealed the topography, conformation, morphometrics, intrinsic muscles and histological characteristics. The larynx was positioned ventral to the axis and comprised one cricoid and one thyroid cartilage (hyaline), one epiglottis (elastic) and a pair of arytenoids (mixed). A pair of sesamoid cartilages was identified between the corniculate processes and the cricoid lamina. Morphometry revealed that thyroid cartilage was the largest. There were no conclusive signs of sexual dimorphism in the larynx of this species. Squamous stratified epithelium predominated and underwent transition to ciliated pseudo-stratified at the level of caudal thyroid and rostral cricoid portions. By comparison, larynx of C. thous showed similarity with the domestic dog, although the shape of cartilages has shown some variation.

Several species of Senecio are widely distributed on pasture lands in Southern Brazil. Farmers from this region are known to complain about declines in reproductive rates in cattl from undetermined causes. Several poisonous plants can cause direct and indirect reproductive disorders in cattle in several countries, including Brazil. However, their pathogenetic mechanisms are still poorly understood. The aim of this study is to describe ovarian lesions in cows with chronic seneciosis, from farms located in the Southwest Mesoregion of Rio Grande do Sul, a southern state in Brazil. Twenty-one cases of bovine chronic seneciosis diagnosed between 2011 and 2014 were analyzed. The study showed that chronic seneciosis is the major cause of death in adult cattle in the region. Four pregnant cows showing classical necropsy large luteal cells (LLG) from the ovaries of these four cows had marked megalocytosis and nuclear pseudo-inclusions. Some LLG showed nuclei with up to 23.69μm in diameter and the increase in size of these nuclei was significantly greater than measured those of control cows. It is concluded that the ingestion Senecio spp. induces ovarian changes in cows and the intoxication should be considered as a possible cause of reproductive failure in cattle herds from this region.

Chondrosarcoma is a malignant neoplasm of bone that develops from the cartilaginous tissues, classified in the category of sarcomas, among the three tumors that most affect the pelvic region of dogs. The objective of this report was to describe the case of a chondrosarcoma located in the right sacroiliac joint in an 8-year-old female canine patient of the German shepherd breed. In this way, we emphasize the importance of the radiographic examination in the diagnostic conclusion, emphasizing that the histopathological examination is the examination of predilection for the definitive diagnosis of this affection.

Abstract Plant intoxications in wildlife are difficult to diagnose, are overlooked, or are sometimes even neglected. Hence, factors that induce wild animals to ingest poisonous plants have not been sufficiently documented. An outbreak of glycoprotein storage disease in sambar deer (Cervus unicolor), induced by ingestion of the swainsonine-containing plant, common wireweed (Sida carpinifolia), is reported. Nine out of 55 deer held by a zoo in Brazil were affected. The poisoning was characterized by emaciation and neurologic signs followed by unexpected death in some of the animals. Animals presented abnormal consciousness, posterior paresis, and musculoskeletal weakness; less evident were vestibulo-cerebellar signs. Histologically, there was vacuolation of neurons and epithelial cells of the pancreatic acines, thyroid follicules, and renal tubules. Furthermore, in the central nervous system were axonal degeneration, necrosis, and loss of neurons. Three factors may lead to the ingestion of S. carpinifolia by sambar deer: 1) A grazing field with only S. carpinifolia as a source of forage; 2) a large number of animals kept in this field; and 3) a hierarchy within a cervid group in which dominant males isolated and displaced juvenile and weaker adult males, leaving them with access to only S. carpinifolia.
