EFFECT OF WIDE-SPECTRUM ANTIBIOTICS ON BACTERICIDAL ACTIVITY OF HUMAN SERUM: IN VITRO AND IN VIVO.

Burton A. Waisbren; Imogene Brown

Wide-spectrum antibiotics decrease the rate at which E. coli are killed by human serum. This phenomenon was demonstrated both in vitro and in patients who had taken chloramphenicol by mouth. Its clinical significance depends on the possible importance of the factor of bactericidal rate in the initiation or outcome of bacterial infections.

Tetanus in an Urban Community.

James T. Botticelli; Burton A. Waisbren

Nine cases of tetanus seen in an urban community are presented. Probably all could have been prevented by active or passive immunization. Two fatal cases developed in spite of early injections of penicillin. Most of the patients were repectable citizens of good nutrition and habits. Adequate treatment of tetanus consists of at least 100,000 units of antitoxin, large doses of penicillin, minimum necessary sedation with barbiturates potentiated by antihistaminics and mephenesin (Mydnesin), tracheostomy if necessary, and meticulous nursing care in a quite, darkened environment.
