Quantitative parameters for interaction of flavonoids-the naturally occurring antioxidants, with solvents and surfactants are determined using UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. The availability of flavonoids; kaempferol, apigenin, kaempferide and rhamnetin in micelles of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is reflected in terms of partition coefficient, K(c). Thermodynamic calculations show that the process of transfer of flavonoid molecules to anionic micelles of SDS is energy efficient. A distortion in flavonoids morphology occurs in case of kaempferol and apigenin in surfactant and water, exhibited in terms of a new band in the UV region of electronic spectra of these flavonoids. The partition coefficients of structurally related flavonoids are correlated with their antioxidant activities.

Micelle–water partition coefficient (Kx ) of naphtholazobenzimidazole dye (NAB) in aqueous solutions of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) has been determined spectrophotometerically. Changes in absorption patterns of dye caused by surfactants and solvents were quantified in terms of dye–surfactant ratio (n D/n S) and solvent water partition coefficients (P), respectively. Multiple residence sites have been suggested for dye molecules within micelles, based on shifts in azo-hydrazone tautomeric equilibrium. Micelle–water partition coefficients were used to evaluate the influence of dye on critical micelle concentration of CTAB and SDS. At same micelle concentration, M, the relative solubility of NAB was greater in cationic surfactant CTAB than in anionic surfactant SDS.

ABSTRACT Densities and sound velocities for aqueous monoethanolamine (MEA) system are reported over the entire composition range at different temperatures (298.15, 303.15, 313.15 and 318.15 K). These experimental data have been further used in calculating the excess molar volume, partial molar volumes, isobaric thermal expansion coefficients and the deviation in isentropic compressibility. The excess molar volumes data were fitted to the Redlich–Kister polynomial equation to obtain their coefficients and standard deviations. The partial molar volume at infinite dilution of both water in MEA and MEA in water and have been determined using two different methods. Knowledge of the above properties of these mixtures is a basis for understanding some of the molecular interactions in these systems. From the analysis of the results, the type of interactions between the MEA and water is discussed in terms of the number and size of the alkyl groups attached to the nitrogen atom of MEA.
