Verification of Hybrid Real Time HVDC Simulator in Cheju-Haenam HVDC System

Byeong-Mo Yang; Chan-Ki Kim; Gil-Jo Jung; Young-Hyun Moon

In this paper a Hybrid Real Time HYDC Simulator for both operator Training and Re-searching in the Cheju-Haenam HYDC System is proposed and its performance is studied by means of RTDS (Real Time Digital Simulator), EMTDC (Electro-Magnetic Transients system for DC), PSS/E (Power System Simulator for Engineering), and experienced scenarios. The objective of this paper is to represent the strategy in development for KEPCOs hybrid HYDC simulator for the Cheju-Haenam HYDC system. This simulator consists of two DC stations, DC cables, external digital/analog controllers, monitoring systems and control desk for education, and AC networks. Its suitability for operators education is tested during startup/shutdown and normal state operations. Dynamic performances of it are also verified.

HVDC performance analysis according to ER-filter and single tuned filter

Chan-Ki Kim; Byeong-Mo Yang; Yoon-Ho Kim; Hong-Woo Rhew

This paper deals with the novel HVDC filter topology. The proposed method is the combination the active filter with ER-filter (energy recovery-filter). The active filter of the proposed method is a kind of hybrid filter, consists of the passive filter and the voltage source. Also, the single tuned active filter to eliminate 11/sup th//13/sup th/ harmonics is proposed. This proposed active filter is very useful to reduce the cost of the active filter. ER-filter is to return the filter power to AC network, used to replace with the damped filter. Consequently, PSCAD/EMTDC is used to investigate the validation of the proposed topology.

Dynamic behavior of reactive compensation in Cheju-Haenam HVDC system

Byeong-Mo Yang; Chan-Ki Kim; Gil-Jo Jung; Young-Hyun Moon

This paper represents the dynamic behavior of reactive power compensation for the Cheju-Hanam HVDC system. Due to changes in the Juju AC network form as it when the Cheju-Haenam HVDC system was built, the need to simulate the exiting reactive power compensation scheme is rising. In order to consider reactive power supply from new thermal power plants of Jeju AC network, a new-reactive compensation method for the stable operation of the HVDC system is proposed. The strength in Jeju AC network is simulated by PSS/E simulation program. Time domain simulation by PSCAD/EMTDC is used to verify the new reactive compensation method

A Study on the Modification of Frequency Detection Position for Frequency Source in HVDC System Using of AC Voltage

Jong-Kwang Park; Chan-Ki Kim; Byeong-Mo Yang; Gil-Jo Jung; Byoung-Sung Han

In this paper deals with the frequency control of the HVDC scheme linking Haenam to Cheju Island. The primary aim of the study is to develop and evaluate a new frequency control that can be employed without having to utilise the existing Synchronous Compensators(Gas Turbines). Transient condition studies are performed utilising the detailed control strategies for the HVDC link, implemented in PSCAD/EMTDC. Study cases are completed involving synchronous compensators trip and load ripping events and study plots presented. It is demonstrated that the existing frequency measurement can be replaced by one derived from the AC network alone, incorporated into a new frequency control algorithm and gives effective frequency control and dynamic performance.

Energy-Based Power System Analysis with the Equivalent Mechanical Model

Young-Hyun Moon; Hwa-Jong Koo; Jong-Gi Lee; Yong-Jun Kwon; Byeong-Mo Yang

Abstract This paper presents a new theoretical approach to energy-based power system analysis using the equivalent mechanical model for multibus power transmission systems. On the basis of mechanical analogy, an exact energy integral expression is derived for lossy multi-bus systems through rigorous energy analysis. A simple rigid rod model of mechanical power transfer system is introduced to address the physical meanings of potential energy terms associated with transfer conductances as well as transfer susceptances. Finally, energy-based analysis has been proposed with the Lagranges Equations and Hamiltonian Equations, which shows that the energy function has all information of the power system characteristics.
