A Study on Inset Fed Microstrip Antenna Loaded with Complementary Single Loop Resonator

Jae-Pyo Hong; Byung-Mun Kim

In this paper, the characteristics of inset fed microstrip antenna loaded with CSLR(complementary single loop resonator) are studied. Effective permeability parameters of the SLR unit cell is retrieved from simulated scattering parameters, and structure parameters of the SLR unit cell are selected so that effective permeability is negative value at the operating frequency. The optimized inset fed microstrip antenna loaded with SLR for a 3 × 3 array in the ground plane of a conventional patch antenna is designed and simulation results of return loss and radiation pattern are shown. At resonant frequency 2.82 GHz, the overall dimension of the proposed antenna is reduced by approximately 56.8% compared to the conventional inset fed antenna. Simulation results are obtained by 3D FEM solver(Ansofts HFSS).

Theoretical and Experimental Investigation on the Probe Design of a Ridge-loaded Slot Type for Near-Field Scanning Microwave Microscope

Hyeok-Woo Son; Byung-Mun Kim; Jae-Pyo Hong; Young-Ki Cho

In this paper, a rectangular waveguide probe with a ridge-loaded straight slot (RLSS) is presented for a near-field scanning microwave microscope (NSMM). The RLSS is located laterally at the end wall of the cavity and is loaded on double ridges in a narrow straight slot to improve the spatial resolution compared with a straight slot. The probe consists of a rectangular cavity with an RLSS and a feed section of a WR-90 rectangular waveguide. When the proposed NSMM is located at distance of 0.1mm in front of a substrate without patches or strips, the simulated full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the probe improve by approximately 31.5 % compared with that of a straight slot without ridges. One dimensional scanning of the E-plane on a sample under test was conducted, and the reflection coefficient of the near-field scanning probe is presented.

Non-Offset Longitudinal Shunt Slot Exited by an Asymmetry Compound Iris

Byung-Mun Kim; Jae-Pyo Hong; Young-Ki Cho

In this paper, a non-offset longitudinal shunt slot excited by an asymmetry compound iris on the broad wall of a rectangular waveguide is presented as an element for a waveguide slot-array antenna(WSAA). By properly adjusting the iris dimension, a resonance of the slot at a desired frequency can be achieved. The proposed resonant slot has some advantageous properties, such as a wide range of normalized resonant conductance, and minimum change of phase in the waveguide at the resonance. In addition, when the slots are arrayed for a waveguide slot antenna, the unwanted cross-polarization level can be reduced because each slot is placed in a straight line. A 8×1 WSAA with —20 dB side-lobe level(SLL) is designed, fabricated, and tested experimentally. The measured results are well agreed with the simulated ones and have an SLL of —18.13 dB and a cross-polarization level of —48.85 dB at 9.41 GHz, which was improved by about 15 dB of that of the conventional longitudinal slot array antenna.

Jun-Seo Park; Hyeok-Woo Son; Jin-Young Choi; Byung-Mun Kim; Young-Ki Cho

H-shaped small resonant aperture is applied to the design of the combined structure of the band-pass filter and the limiter by incorporating PIN diode into the resonant aperture structure. Single stage and double stage limiters are designed and experimented and the utility of the proposed types is confirmed.

A Study of Center Longitudinal Shunt-Series Coupling Slot Fed by Asymmetric Compound Iris for Waveguide Slot Coupler

Byung-Mun Kim; Ji-Hwan Ko; Young-Ki Cho

This paper proposes a new coupling element of microwave slot coupler for designing waveguide slot array which can reduce the effect of undesired higher order mode coupling between coupling and radiating slots in the branch waveguide. The proposed device is composed of a centered longitudinal shunt-series coupling slot at the center of broad wall shared by two crossed rectangular waveguides and an asymmetric compound iris that excites the coupling slot. We first have obtained scattering parameters for the proposed coupler by use of EM S/W tool HFSS and then extracted the parameters of T- network equivalent circuit for the coupling slot. We also have analyzed the resonant properties such as resonant length and normalized admittance by changing the geometrical dimensions. The measured results for the fabricated coupler with short-circuited block away from the coupling slot are well agreed with the simulated ones.

Design and Experiment of Waveguide Limiter with Band-Pass Characteristics Using PIN Diode

Jun-Seo Park; Byung-Mun Kim; Young-Ki Cho

In this paper, the method of design of the waveguide band-pass filter and limiter in radar system is proposed. First, we design a self-resonant iris, which can behave as a band-pass filter by mounting the PIN diode on the iris. When low power microwave is incident on the proposed element, the element behaves as a band-pass filter. Under a high power microwave condition, however, the element behaves as a limiter having wide band stop characteristics. The fabricated element has a pass band with -0.7 dB insertion loss at 10 GHz under the low power condition and isolation about 25 dB under the high power condition.

Ridge-Loaded Small Round-Ended Slot for Waveguide Slot-Array Antenna

Byung-Mun Kim; Jong-Ig Lee; Young-Ki Cho

In this paper, a small round-ended slot loaded by double ridges on the broad wall of a rectangular waveguide is presented as an element for a waveguide slot-array antenna(WSAA). By properly adjusting the ridge dimension, a resonance of the slot at a desired frequency can be achieved. The resonant length of the proposed slot is about (free space wave length) at the resonance frequency. The proposed resonant slot has some advantageous properties, such as small size, small resonant conductance, and short and stable resonant slot length. In addition, the characteristics of the slots are slightly affected by the adjacent elements when the slots are arrayed for a waveguide slot antenna. A WSAA with -20 dB side-lobe level(SLL) is designed, fabricated, and tested experimentally. The measured results are well agreed with the simulated ones and have an SLL of -15.9 dB and a half-power beam width of in the E-plane and in the H-plane, respectively, at 9.41 GHz.

Design and Experiment of a Miniaturized Waveguide Band-Pass Filter Using L-Type Inverter and Small Resonant Aperture

Jin-Young Choi; Byung-Mun Kim; Young-Ki Cho

In this paper, a miniaturized band-pass filter structure, which comprises the irises of small resonant aperture and L-type irises inverter, is proposed. Ridged circular aperture iris is chosen as an elementary resonator. L-type iris which is placed between two adjacent elementary resonators is newly proposed as impedance inverter in order to reduce longitudinal length of the proposed filter. The fabricated minimized filter has 400 MHz bandwidth at the 10 GHz center frequency and the whole size is reduced to 70 % in length compared to conventional filter.

The Analysis of Dual Resonant Iris for Designing Waveguide Band-Pass Filter

Jin-Young Choi; Byung-Mun Kim; Young-Ki Cho

This paper deals with transmission characteristics of a new dual resonant structure for designing waveguide band-pass filter. The structure which has a pass-band between two adjacent stop-bands in a single body consists of circular ridged aperture and four armed conducting patch. The dual resonant behavior of the structure can be represented by a combination of LC series and parallel resonant circuits. Also these resonant properties can be easily controlled by varying the geometry of the aperture and four armed conducting patch. Actually, the structure is fabricated on the microstrip substrate by use of etching technique so that it is formed an iris type resonator which can be easily put into the transverse plane of the waveguide. We use WR-90 standard waveguide, adapters, and VNA(vector network analyzer) to measure the resonant characteristics of the structure. It is very useful to design and to improve the cutoff skirts characteristics in the waveguide band-pass filter design area.
