The expensive satellite communication currently accessible from ships is ill equipped to meet the needs of a growing number of seafaring Internet users. In order to provide cheap and high-speed Internet access to ships, the radio coverage of existing broadband networks can be extended through a multi-hop network that provides wireless links between neighboring ships. One of the most important issues in such networks is the appropriate choice of a routing protocol that provides efficient and reliable communication. In this paper, a maritime two-state routing protocol for a multi-hop ship network is proposed that provides efficient and reliable communication with a minimum of overhead. The maritime path loss model considered for simulations and the mobility model used in this paper represent real traffic of ships. In this paper, the proposed routing protocol is compared to the leading alternatives and simulation results are presented to quantify the performance.

Shipbuilding is one of the major export industries of Korea, it has been occupied the top spot in world markets. It is not easy work to keep prestige up. It is necessary to develop the technologies of ship and IT convergence to strengthen competitive and to achieve sustainable growth. Wireless ad-hoc mesh network in sea environments is one of the important parts of ship and IT convergence. In this paper, the architecture of wireless maritime network communication is presented based on Wimax and the idea to simulate wireless communication on sea using Qualnet simulator is shown. We describe Bit Error Rate (BER) levels according to sea status, affects physical layer of wireless communication. BER patterns are designed using MATLAB.

In this paper, we introduce new types of Telematics services for a convergence of Telematics and USN technology and explain several requirements needed for those services. Then, we propose a Telematics application framework that can satisfy those requirements of a real-time service, a reliable data acquisition, and an efficient query processing. The framework is composed of Telematics sensor nodes, Telematics service station, and Telematics vehicle that can provide users with reliable and real-time traffic safety services. Also, we present important issues and solutions that can be applied to an implementation of the framework; In-network spatial query processing, vehicle location determination, and real-time and reliable routing protocol. It is expected that this framework can be helpful for the future Telematics services as a standard model when ubiquitous computing society is pervasively activated.
