Abstract In order to recover the charge lost by electron-ion recombination, we doped pure liquid argon with a photosensitive hydrocarbon, tetra-methyl-germanium (TMG), in the 3 ton ICARUS TPC. A charge increase of 25% to 220% was observed for different electric fields and for energy densities ranging from 1.6 to 32 MeV/cm.

Abstract We report on the performance of a liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber, operating in a 10 m 3 cryostat. This device built in the framework of the ICARUS T600 programme to serve as a full test facility for the adopted cryogenics and mechanical solutions, was successfully tested in 2000 as the last step before the tests of the first 600 t ICARUS module 1 year later. In a final run at the Gran Sasso Laboratory, whose outcome provides the main subject of this paper, also the readout and imaging capabilities of the installed wire chamber and the overall performance of the detector have been successfully tested.

In the CMS experiment, sub-detectors may send special trigger signals, called “Technical Triggers”, for purposes like test and calibration. The Resistive Plate Chambers are part of the Muon Trigger System of the experiment, but might also produce a cosmic muon trigger to be used during the commissioning of the detectors, the CMS Magnet Test-Cosmic Challenge and the later running of CMS. The proposed implementation is based on the development of a new board, the RPC Balcony Collector (RBC); the test results on prototypes and their performance during the recent CMS Cosmic Challenge are presented.

Abstract RPC neutron sensitivity has been studied during two tests done with different neutrons energies. In the first test, neutrons from spontaneous fission events of 252 Cf were used (average energy 2 MeV ); while in the second test neutrons were produced using a 50 MeV deuteron beam on a 1 cm thick beryllium target (average energy 20 MeV ). Preliminary results show that the neutron sensitivity in double gap mode is (0.52±0.03)×10−3 at about 2 MeV and (5.3±0.5)×10−3 at about 20 MeV .

Abstract We report on neutrino physics with the ICARUS detector. Extensive Montecarlo simulations have shown that the neutrino physics programme is particularly well suited for the innovative detection technique of the ICARUS experiment.

Recent operation results of a three-ton liquid argon time projection chamber for the ICARUS project are reported. This elecronic continually sensitive, self-triggering bubble-chamber is capable of providing 3D imaging of any ionizing event in conjunction with a good calorimetric response.
