The level of selenium in cancer patients is lower than that in control subjects. However, low selenium levels in body fluids can be due to the malnutrition observed in these patients. There is evidence from epidemiologic studies that high dietary selenium intakes and high selenium status in people are associated with lower cancer mortality. However, contradictory information has been found in some prospective studies. The presence of other nutrients in selenium-rich foods can influence the role of the selenium in cancer etiology. Therefore, there are selenium antagonistic elements that inhibit the anticarcinogenic effects of selenium and other antioxidant micronutrients such as ascorbic acid, retinol, beta-carotene, alpha-tocopherol, and some other elements have a synergistic effect on the prevention of cancer.

Abstract Concentrations of Pb and Cd were determined in samples of human, raw and pasteurized cows and goats milk and powdered infant formula. The following mean Cd concentrations (and ranges) were recorded: in human milk, 2.70 μg/l (0.6–11.3, n=55); in raw cows milk, 4.88 μg/l (0.7–23.1, n=47); in pasteurized cows milk, 4.30 μg/l (3.4–5.9, n=6); in goats milk, 7.81 μg/l (1.0–18.4, n=38); and in powdered, infant formula, 3.81 μg/l (3.4–4.1, n=5). The concentrations (and ranges) of Pb were: in human milk, 8.34 μg/l (0.1–32.3, n=55); in raw cows milk, 14.82 μg/l (1.3–39.1, n=28); in pasteurized cows milk, 10.25 μg/l (6.9–19.6, n=6); in goats milk, 11.86 μg/l (0.4–38.5, n=36); and in powdered, infant formula, 8.30 μg/l (5.1–10.6, n=5). Our data were within the normal ranges for each kind of milk. The Cd and Pb concentrations in goats milk were significantly higher than the concentrations observed in the other milks, whereas human milk and powdered infant formula presented the lowest Cd and Pb concentrations. A considerable decrease in the concentration of Cd with the stage of lactation was observed. The concentrations of Cd and Pb in human, cows and goats milk also varied according to the time of year. The concentrations of Pb and Cd in the different milks did not present any risk to human health (infants or adults).

Total phenol and flavonoid contents were analyzed by HPLC coupled with a diode array detector in 5 traditional onion cultivars from Tenerife (Guayonje, San Juan de la Rambla, Carrizal Alto, Carrizal Bajo, and Masca) and a commercial cultivar (Texas Early Grano 502). Five quercetin chemical species (isoquercetin, quercetin diglucoside, quercetin monoglucoside 1, quercetin monoglucoside 2, and free quercetin) and kaempferol were identified and quantified in the onion samples. Quercetin monoglucoside 1 and quercetin diglucoside were the major flavonoids accounting for 80% of the total quercetin content. The mean quercetin monoglucoside 1: quercetin diglucoside ratio (QMG/QDG) was 1: 2.2. There were differences between the onion cultivars in the cases of total phenol, quercetin diglucoside, isoquercetin, QMG/QDG ratio, and kaempferol. The Texas cultivar had a higher QMG/QDG ratio and a higher kaempferol content than the traditional cultivars. The correlation study showed significant correlations between the analyzed phenolic components.

Objective: Biochemical and haematological parameters of nutritional interest were determined in the serum of opiate addicts in order to compare them with those obtained in healthy subjects. Linear discriminant analysis was applied for the differentiation of the opiate addicts.Subjects: Sera of 106 opiate addicts in detoxification treatment (n=19) or in Methadone Maintenance Treatment Program (MMTP) (n=87) were studied.Design: The determination of classical biochemical and haematological parameters in blood samples was carried out using standardized methods. Determination of retinol and α-tocopherol was carried out by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detector. Folic acid and vitamin B12 were determined using competitive binding techniques. Minerals were determined by flame emission spectrometry (Na and K) and atomic absorption spectrometry with air–acetylene flame (Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu and Zn) or with hydride generation (Se). Phosphorous was determined using a colorimetric method with ammonium molibdate. All statistical analyses were performed by means of the SPSS version 10.0 software for Windows. Results: Stepwise linear discriminant analysis simplified the system to the following variables: Na, K, Mg, number of leucocytes, triglycerides, GPT, glucose, albumin, retinol and folic acid; and 90.1% (86.4% after crossvalidation) of correct classification was obtained. Representing the first and second discriminant functions, the control groups were well separated from opiate addicts. Conclusions: Applying linear discriminant analysis on several biochemical and haematological parameters, the opiate addicts could clearly be differentiated from the control individuals, and a tendency to differentiate the opiate addicts in MMTP and in detoxification treatment was observed.

Fluorescence of the Se-2,3-diaminonaphthalene (DAN) complex has been studied in aqueous solutions with several organic solvents. With all organic solvents, the wavelength of the emission maxima in water was shifted to shorter wavelengths. However, the wavelength of the excitation maxima did not change. Fluorescence intensity (IF) of the Se-DAN complex observed with most organic media, increased with respect to the IF observed in water. However, the precision was poorer using the organic solvents than the precision found in water. Tetrahydrofuran (90%) and 1,4-dioxane (90%) exhibit the highest increases of IF. Higher enhancements of IF of the Se-DAN complex were observed when the concentration of organic solvent increased. So, the equations In IF = a + b · (% organic solvent)23 and 1/IF = a + b · (% organic solvent)12 could be established. Maximum IF of the Se-DAN complex in the studied organic media was obtained at a pH between 2.5 and 3.5. Tetrahydrofuran and acetonitrile showed the highest stability in the presence and absence of sunlight. Tetrahydrofuran (90%) and acetonitrile (60%) presented the best detection limits 1.96 and 3.00 μg Se l−1, respectively, showing a 23- and 15-fold improvement of the detection limit in aqueous medium. Acetonitrile (60%) was satisfactorily compared with hydride generation-atomic absorption spectrometry.

The concentrations of manganese, selenium, nickel and cadmium were determined in 112 samples of molluscs belonging to mussels (Mytilus chilensis, n = 47) and limpets (Nacella deaurata, n = 65), which were collected from the coastline of the Magellan Strait, Chile. Four (6.2%) samples of limpets exceeded the maximum limits for cadmium established in Europe. Limpets showed higher mean manganese, nickel and cadmium concentrations than mussels, whilst the mean selenium concentration in mussels was higher. The consumption of one serving (100 g) of molluscs represents a considerable contribution to the dietary daily intake of selenium, and limpets make a significant contribution to the manganese and cadmium intakes. The sampling zone influenced the trace element concentrations, and different uptakes were observed between the mollusc species. Abstract A fast, selective and economical method for the determination of retinol and α-tocopherol is presented. Both vitamins are separated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in less than 4 min using an isocratic elution with methanol. The robustness of the method was checked in real samples, obtaining relative standard deviation lower than 3%. The described method was satisfactorily applied to serum samples proceeding of patients enrolled in a methadone maintenance treatment program. The retinol concentrations in the serum of these patients fell into the normal interval of concentrations; however, the serum α-tocopherol contents were higher than the normal values.

The concentrations of the essential metals Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, and Zn were determined in 126 specimens of molluscs belonging to five different species: Mytilus chilensis, n=47; Nacella deaurata, n=65; Aulacomya ater, n=4; Fissurella picta, n=4; Acanthina monodon, n=6, collected from the coastline of the Magellan Strait. Significant differences were obtained among the mean metal concentrations in the mollusc species considered. The contribution to the dietary daily intake of these metals for the consumption of one serving of these molluscs was high, especially the contribution to the Fe intake for the consumption of N. deaurata. Some significant differences were observed among the mean concentrations for the studied metals according to the zone of sampling. The influence of the zone of sampling on the mean concentration of metals in N. deaurata was higher than in M. chilensis. The application of lineal discriminant analysis (LDA) made it possible to differentiate statistically between specimens according to the mollusc species. Within the each mollusc species, the LDA helped to identify specimens according to the zone of sampling and weight/length ratio.

Abstract Urinary selenium (Se) concentrations (μg Se/l and μg Se/g creatinine) have been determined in heroin abusers and in healthy controls. Heroin abusers showed significantly ( P ) lower urinary Se concentrations (μg Se/l and μg Se/g creatinine) than healthy controls. The decrease of the urinary Se concentration (μg Se/g creatinine) observed with the increase in age of heroin abusers may be due to the higher exposure to heroin with increased age. No significant differences ( P > 0.100 ) of urinary Se concentrations (both as μg Se/l and μg Se/g creatinine) are observed between heroin abusers during methadone treatment and heroin abusers who have stopped taking the drug, with respect to healthy controls.

Conclusion: Trematode Aspdogastrea is prevalent in the freshwater bivalves living in the Yangtze River basin running through Anhui area, and the treamatode was identified as Aspidogaster sp. belong to Aspidogaste under Aspidogastridae of Aspidogastrea. Objective: to assess the use of oral nutritional supplements analyzing the reason for prescription and its implication in caloric-protein intake. Setting: study performed at a university hospital of 350 beds with medical and surgical specialties. Subjects, patients: Patients inclusion was done by selecting all starting oral nutritional supplement prescription. Exclusion criteria were being younger than 18 years, being admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, having cognition or communication impairments, being on concomitant parenteral nutrition or requiring complete enteral diet, and/or using nasogastric tube for feeding. We also excluded special enteral diets, specifically designed for certain conditions. Interventions: One-year long prospective study on prescription of oral nutritional supplements. Through clinical chart review and personal interview, we recorded demographic data, nutritional parameters, characteristics of the diet and supplement, and caloricprotein intake prescribed and ingested. The data were introduced in an Access97 database and processed by means of SPSS software for Windows®. We performed a descriptive study of quantitative and qualitative variables, a χ2 analysis between qualitative variables, and a comparative analysis between means of all paired data by means of the student’s t test, and variance analysis between quantitative variables. The significance level was set at p < 0.05. Results: we were only able to analyze 77 out of 130 prescriptions for nutritional supplements since we could not adequately interview the remaining patients, mainly due to neurological impairments. Mean age was 74.8 years (SD = 12) and 50.6% were women. The departments prescribing the highest number of supplements were hematology (22.1%) and internal medicine (20.8%). GI neoplasm was the most frequent diagnosis at admission (27.3%). The most frequent indication was kwashiorkor (45.5%), with 15.6% of patients being well nourished. Mean therapy duration was 11 days (SD = 11.1), and the main reason for termination was hospital discharge (70.1%). Ninguna solucion contenia hierro.Objective. To assess the impact of weight loss in clinical progression of the comorbidities in a group of morbid obese patients submitted to surgical treatment with the duodenal switch technique. Study setting. Between 2001-2006, we have operated by the duodenal crossing technique a total of 118 morbid obese patients (97 women and 21 men), mean age 42.6 years. Average pre-surgical BMI was 49.7, with average overweight of 69.1 kg. After surgical intervention, we have prospectively assessed the progression of the main comorbidities (arterial hypertension, diabetes, OSAS, osteoarticular pathology, dyslipidemia), according to the subscale of the BAROS scoring system. Postsurgical controls are done at months 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 and annually thereafter. We have followed-up 110 patients, of whom 90 presented comorbidities, being the ones studied. Results. At 3 months post-surgery, we observed a decrease in the mean value of %WL to 31%, and a mean BMI value of 41.3, the percentage of lost BMI being 40.3%. Most of the weight loss occurred within 2 years, with %WL of 74.8% and a percentage of lost BMI of 97.7%. In 68 patients (75.5%) there was resolution of their comorbidities, 14.4% having improvement, and 10% with no improvement in spite of the surgery. Of patients achieving complete resolution, almost all of them achieved it within two years after surgery. Cure rates correlate with weight loss, so that at 3 months, with a mean weight loss of 25 kg (BMI decrease of 8.4 points) the comorbidity resolution rate is 45.5%. At 12 months, with a mean decrease in BMI of 16.4 points, %WL of 61.6% and % of lost BMI of 70.4%, the comorbidity resolution rate is 89.7%. At two years, by the time most of the main comorbidities resolved (68 patients), the BMI decreased by 22.4 points, the %WL 74.8% and the % of lost BMI 97.9%. Conclusion. The aim of bariatric surgery is weight loss and overweight-associated comorbidities improvement. In our study, most of the comorbidities improvement started at the third month, with the highest improvement rate occurring within two years, verifying that there is a direct relationship between post-surgical weight loss comorbidities improvement and resolution in most of the cases. Objective: To investigate the breeding rate and breeding density of Carpoglyphus lactis in stored Fructus Jujubae in Anhui, China in order to provide a scientific basis for prevention of Carpoglyphus lactis(C. lactis) from spoiling the dried fruit of such category. Methods: By the breeding nature of C. lactis, we collected samples of Fructus Jujubae, which were kept over 6 months in general, from the dried fruit shop and (or) Chinese herbal medicine warehouse, and isolated C. lactis from those samples. The mite specimens were prepared, and microscopically and morphologically identified. Species classification was done in accordance with Hughes (1976). Result:C. lactis was identified in 19 of the 300 samples, with breeding density and breeding rate of 6.52 heads/g and 6.33%. Constitute ratio at distinct developmental phase was associated with adult (including nymph, 85.71%), larva(12.27%), hypopus (0.56%) and egg(1.45%), respectively. The richness index, diversity index and evenness index was1.644, 1.644 and 0.923, respectively. Conclusion: Carpoglyphus lactis appears infesting in large quantity in the Fructus Jujubae stored in the above places in Anhui province, and the density is higher. Therefore, it is urgent to take effective measures to prevent C. lactis from spreading over other dried products stored in the same room and potential human intestinal acariasis as a result of the biological contamination. Objective: To determine possible associations between the risk of breast cancer in Brazilian women and demographic, social and economical variables, and past dietary intake. Methods: A case-control study was conducted in Joinville, Santa Catarina, Brazil, between june and november 2003 involving a group of 33 women recently diagnosed with breast cancer and a control group of 33 healthy women volunteers. Personal details, health history and past dietary intake were obtained via questionnaires and interviews. Data between groups were compared using χ2, Fisher, and Student’s t test, whilst associations were evaluated using a non-conditional logistic regression method and odds ratio (OR). Results: Statistically significant differences between the two groups were revealed with respect to age distribution (P = 0.007), family income level (P = 0.02), educational level (P 45 years), low family income (<
