We have measured the fusion - fission excitation functions for the reaction and the reaction. (The radioactive beam was produced by projectile fragmentation.) The thresholds were measured to be and MeV for the and induced reactions, respectively. This result agrees with the systematics of fusion excitation functions and may be significant in the synthesis of new heavy nuclei.

The (d,n) reaction of 7Be to form the ground state of 8B was studied in inverse kinematics using a 25 MeV/nucleon beam of 7Be nuclei from the A1200 fragment separator at the NSCL. The recoiling 8B nuclei were observed in a pair of position sensitive detector telescopes at lab angles between 1° and 5.5° (7° to 38° CMS). A large array of neutron detectors was placed at angles ranging from 158° to 104° (35° to 7° CMS) that measured the energy of coincident neutrons by their time-of-flight. The cross section for the d(7Be,8B)n reaction was determined from both the charged-particle singles and from the neutron coincidence data. In addition to measuring the transfer reaction, the quasi-elastic scattering of 7Be from deuterium was measured. The cross sections of these reactions are compared with DWBA and coupled-channels calculations.
