Superconducting Gap in Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O by High-Resolution Angle-Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy

C. G. Olson; Rui Liu; A.-B. Yang; David W. Lynch; A. J. Arko; R.S. List; B.W. Veal; Y.C. Chang; P.Z. Jiang; A.P. Paulikas

Detailed studies indicate a superconducting gap in the high-temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8. Photoemission measurements with high energy and angle resolution isolate the behavior of a single band as it crosses the Fermi level in both the normal and superconducting states, giving support to the Fermi liquid picture. The magnitude of the gap is 24 millielectron volts.

The k-resolved single particle excitations, as determined by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), are compared and contrasted for, LaRu2Si2, CeRu2Si2, ThRu2Si2, and URu2Si2, isostructural layered compounds with differing nominal f-occupations of f0, f1, f0, and f2, respectively. ARPES measurements include 4d and 5d-edge resonant photoemission to distinguish f-character and Fermi-energy intensity mapping of Fermi surface contours. Comparison to RLAPW band structure calculations shows very good agreement of the d-band structure away from EF. Discrepancies in the near EF region highlight k-dependent effects of f-correlation and f-d hybridization. Approximately equal dimensions of Fermi contours for X=(La, Ce) suggest the exclusion of 4f electrons from the CeRu2Si2 Fermi surface at temperatures far above the Kondo temperature. High-resolution spectra for X=(Ce, U) allow comparison of f-d mixing to predictions of the Anderson lattice model. Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

strongly suggest that the NFL behavior has a purely electronic origin. In relation to the theoretical Luttinger liquid line shape, we identify significant similarities, but also important differences.

Abstract The optical properties of the alkali metal tungsten bronzes are investigated. A review of existing data and the interpretation thereof is presented. Our absorptivity or reflectivity data for two cubic Na bronzes and for a tetragonal K bronze in the energy range 0.1 to 38 eV are displayed; the data are Kramers-Kronig analyzed and the optical constants are obtained. When feasible, comparisons are made with the existing data for the bronzes as well as for ReO 3 , which is structurally similar. The interpretation of optical constants is based on an existing band structure for ReO 3 and modifications thereto are suggested.
