Prediction of energy balance in a high yielding dairy herd in early lactation: model development and precision

Abstract This study was conducted to (1) predict herd mean EB, and (2) investigate whether herd size affects the precision of prediction. In order to achieve the first goal, it was studied to what extent milk test day information, body condition scores, and blood and milk ketones can estimate energy balance at cow level. EB was calculated in 72 Holstein–Freisian cows of one research herd (10,500 kg milk per 305-day lactation) during lactation weeks 2–12. A repeated measures model was used for multiple regression of predictors on energy balance. In addition to a base model (including lactation week, parity and milk yield), the fat–protein-ratio, milk fat and milk protein concentrations explained substantially more variability in EB than did milk lactose concentration and body condition scores, or tests for ketone bodies. A simulation of random selections of milk test day and animal subsets showed that sufficiently precise prediction of energy balance would require either herds larger than 150 cows or pooling of the results of subsequent test days. It was concluded that milk test day information without ketone levels or body condition scores is sufficient to estimate herd mean energy balance, but that herd size limits the precision of prediction. Model validation in other herds and rations would be the next phase of this research.

A review of prevention and control of heifer mastitis via non-antibiotic strategies.

Clinical and subclinical mastitis is a significant problem in primiparous dairy cattle (heifers) with a higher prevalence and incidence in heifers than cows, especially early in lactation. Differences in management (e.g. nutrition, pasturing, no use of dry cow therapy) as well as differences in physiological status (e.g. continuing growth in heifers) are likely contribute to the observed differences between heifers and cows. These differences may result in the requirement for different approaches for mastitis management in heifers than for cows. Mastitis is a multifactorial disease, hence control requires an understanding of the risk factors before effective interventions can be defined. Control strategies are aimed at reducing the incidence of new intramammary infections and eliminating existing infections. Potential strategies can include improved environmental and animal hygiene, application of internal and external teat sealants, prepartum application of teat antiseptics, prepartum milking and control of horn fly in environments where it acts as vector. Other less well-proven strategies to control heifer mastitis include management of heifers as a physically separate group from older cows and not feeding mastitic milk to calves. It is concluded that several well-proven strategies are available to manage heifer mastitis. However, further research is likely to improve understanding of heifer mastitis and lead to novel managerial approaches to mastitis control in this age group.

Invited review: A systematic literature review and meta-analysis of mortality and culling in dairy cattle

Dairy industries and individual farmers are concerned about mortality and culling of dairy animals. This is because the timing and fates of animals that exit dairy farms have important animal welfare and economic consequences that reflect the conditions under which they are farmed and the efficiency of their production systems. Reports from a few countries have indicated increased incidence of mortality, and occasionally culling, of dairy animals in recent decades, and these changes have been associated with intensification of production systems. Dairy industries and farmers need benchmarks for culling and mortality against which they can compare themselves, as well as improved understanding of the extent of any change and of any associated factors. We reasoned that a systematic literature review and meta-analysis of scientific articles published between 1989 and 2014 would allow us to determine whether these reports were universal, to quantify any change over time, and to investigate whether production systems or study factors were associated with culling and mortality. From 3,275 articles retrieved from databases and manual searching of cited articles, 118 articles were appraised independently by 2 assessors, and 51 articles representing 54 studies were determined to be eligible for review and meta-analysis. We estimated that both the annual incidence risk (IR) and incidence density of mortality of cows had increased significantly from 0.02 per cow and 2.32 per 100 cow-years, to 0.04 per cow and 3.75 per 100 cow-years, an increase per decade of 0.02 per cow and 1.42 per 100 cow-years, respectively. We also estimated that the annual IR of culling attributed to low production had declined significantly from 0.07 to 0.05 and that the IR of perinatal, but not neonatal, mortality had increased significantly from 0.04 to 0.06 per decade. We found no evidence of change in overall annual IR of culling of cows over time or any association between study design factors and the IR or incidence density of culling or mortality. These findings provide benchmarks for describing culling and mortality, and should encourage farmers and researchers in countries with modern dairy industries to discover and implement management strategies to reduce the animal welfare and economic costs associated with these changes.

Efficacy of a Neospora caninum killed tachyzoite vaccine in preventing abortion and vertical transmission in dairy cattle.

A clinical trial was undertaken to assess the efficacy of Bovilis(®) Neoguard, a killed Neospora caninum tachyzoite vaccine on 5 commercial dairy farms in New Zealand with a history of Neospora-associated abortion. Cattle were enrolled in the trial at 30-60 days of gestation and randomly allocated to treatment or control groups. Treatment consisted of 5 mL doses of Bovilis Neoguard administered subcutaneously at enrolment then 4 weeks later. Isotonic saline was administered to the control group. Of 2246 cattle enrolled in the trial, 10.7% of cows and 12.6% of heifers were seropositive to N. caninum. Sampling of a randomly selected proportion of enrolled animals 6 weeks after the second treatment showed that 188/232 (81.0%) vaccinated with Bovilis(®) Neoguard had seroconverted, while 11/130 (8.5%) cows and 10/36 (27.8%) heifers in the control group had seroconverted. Forty-eight vaccinated and 63 control animals aborted. On one farm 12.5% of control animals and 6.1% of vaccinated animals aborted (vaccine efficacy 0.61; p=0.03). On another farm with a high level of abortion 8.4% of control animals and 8.7% of vaccinates aborted. On the remaining 3 farms fewer abortions occurred than expected. A modified Poisson regression approach was used to calculate relative risks for abortion and vertical transmission. Overall vaccine efficacy was 0.25 (p=0.12). Heifer replacement calves from the animals enrolled in the trial were sampled for antibodies to N. caninum at 6-9 months of age. Fourteen of 17 calves from vaccinated, seropositive cows were seropositive as were 13/23 calves from seropositive cows in the control group. The interaction between dam serostatus and treatment group was significant (p=0.05) with vaccination increasing the risk of vertical transmission. It was concluded that vaccination after conception prevented 61% abortions in one of five herds and that vaccination may have increased the risk of early embryonic death.

Management of gastrointestinal nematode parasites on sheep farms in New Zealand

Abstract AIM: To report current farmer opinions and farming practices relating to control of gastrointestinal nematodes and anthelmintic resistance on sheep farms in New Zealand. METHODS: An interview-based cross-sectional study of grazing management and anthelmintic useage was conducted by veterinarians on 80 randomly selected sheep farms in New Zealand. RESULTS: Useable data were returned by 74/80 (92%) farmers who participated in the study. However, despite contacting 400 farmers the target sample size of 100 farms was not reached. The results indicated that only 31% of farms had previously tested for drench resistance, that effective quarantine-drenching of imported stock was not always carried out, and that farmers were more likely to integrate cattle than ewes into their grazing management of lambs. Furthermore, the number of drenches given to lambs had changed little in 25 years. The use of faecal egg counting by farmers has increased. CONCLUSIONS: Dependence on anthelmintics continues to be high on sheep farms in New Zealand. Whilst the number of drench treatments has changed little, there is more widespread use of persistent or long-acting treatments. Farmers need to be encouraged to monitor the resistance status of nematode populations on their farms and use this information to develop strategies aimed at maintaining susceptible alleles within the parasite populations and conserving the efficacy of existing drug families.

Farm management practices associated with macrocyclic lactone resistance on sheep farms in New Zealand

Abstract AIM: To identify farm practices associated with the presence of resistance to a macrocyclic lactone (ML) anthelmintic on sheep farms in New Zealand. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted to test for associations between the presence of resistance to an ML anthelmintic (ivermectin) and management practices on sheep farms in New Zealand. Selection of farms was both random (n=80) and purposive (n=32; being farms with a history of suspected ML resistance). Resistance was inferred from faecal nematode egg count (FEC) reduction (FECR) tests (FECRTs) when there was <95% reduction in FEC 7–10 days after treatment with a half dose of ivermectin (0.1 mg/kg). A logistic regression model was built to identify farm-level factors that were associated with the presence or absence of ML resistance. RESULTS: Of the 112 flock managers that were approached for interview, 103 (92%) returned useable questionnaires. The odds of ML resistance were increased: on farms that had used long-acting ML products in ewes as a pre-lambing treatment for ≥3 of the previous 5 years (odds ratio (OR) = 7.2; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.7–30.3); on farms where <70% of the total stock units mid-winter were from sheep (OR=6.5; 95% CI=1.6–25.6); on farms which over the year purchased ≥10% of the number of sheep present mid-winter (OR=7.1; 95% CI=1.5–34.7); and on farms where the average wool diameter of the main flock was <37 (OR=4.1; 95% CI=1.1–14.7) microns. The model provided a good fit to the data (pseudo R2=0.64; Hosmer-Lemeshow statistic = 0.38). CONCLUSIONS: Explanatory factors identified as associated with the presence of ML (ivermectin) resistance on farms included the use of long-acting anthelmintic formulations in ewes pre-lambing, sources of refugia of unselected parasites on the farm, breed of sheep and their requirements for anthelmintic treatments, and the importing of resistant parasites with purchased stock. The study provides support for controls that aim to provide refugia of susceptible worms and that minimise the risk of introduction of resistance through effective quarantine-drenching.

Prevalence of pathogenic Leptospira spp. in sheep in a sheep-only abattoir in New Zealand

Abstract AIM: To determine the prevalence of the two most commonly diagnosed pathogenic Leptospira spp. serovars, Hardjobovis and Pomona, in sheep in a sheep-only abattoir in New Zealand, and to determine the prevalence of kidneys which were leptospire culture-positive collected from sheep seropositive or seronegative to the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). METHODS: A repeated cross-sectional observational study was conducted of serological and kidney culture prevalences of Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar Hardjobovis and Leptospira interrogans serovar Pomona. Lines of sheep and individual sheep were systematically randomly selected at a sheep-only abattoir during 18 May 2004 to November 2004 and 06 December 2004 to 14June 2005. Additionally, a cross-sectional study examined prevalences in a purposively selected line of sheep from a flock with clinical evidence of an outbreak of leptospirosis. RESULTS: In the study population of 15,855 sheep of which 2,758 were sampled, 5.7 (95% CI=4.9–6.7)% were seropositive to one or both serovars; 44.2 (95% CI=34.6-54.2)% of 95 lines of sheep and 44.9 (95% CI=35.0-55.3)% of 89 farms showed serological evidence of infection. The serological prevalence of serovar Hardjobovis was significantly higher than that of serovar Pomona both at line (33% and 4%, respectively) and individual (5% and 1%, respectively) levels. A low but persistent seroprevalence of Hardjobovis throughout both years suggested low-level endemicity to this serovar, whereas Pomona infections appeared to besporadic. Leptospires were isolated from kidneys of 8/37 (22%)Hardjobovis- and 1/6 (17%) Pomona-seropositive, and 5/499(1%) seronegative animals. Of the animals purposively sampled from a farm with a clinical outbreak of leptospirosis, all kidneys from the 13 seropositive animals were culture-positive, indicating a high risk of exposure of meat workers in outbreak situations. Kidneys of MAT-seropositive sheep were 21.7 (95% CI=7.6–61.9) times more likely to test culture-positive than kidneys from animals with negative MAT titres. In general, the results indicated that 13/1,000 sheep slaughtered were potentially shedding leptospires. CONCLUSIONS: The study demonstrated the presence of a definite risk of occupational exposure of meat workers in a sheep-only slaughterhouse to the two most commonly diagnosed pathogenic Leptospira spp. serovars in New Zealand.

Leptospirosis in farmed deer in New Zealand: A review

Abstract Current knowledge of leptospirosis in farmed deer in New Zealand is reviewed. Over the past 25 years, leptospirosis has been reported to occur in individual cases as well as in herd outbreaks in farmed deer and in human cases linked to farmed deer. Serological studies and evidence from bacterial culture suggest infection is widespread. Mixing of young stock from several sources appears to be a significant risk factor for outbreaks. The culture of Leptospira interrogans Hardjobovis, Pomona and Copenhageni has been reported. Infection with serovar Hardjobovis had the highest prevalence, either individually or mixed with serovar Pomona. Infection with serovar Copenhageni appears uncommon and its pathogenicity in deer is unproven. Titres to serovars Australis, Ballum, Balcanica and Tarassovi have been reported. Deer appear to be maintenance hosts for serovar Hardjobovis, incidental or accidental hosts and probably a maintenance population for serovar Pomona, since some infections persist for several months, and accidental hosts for serovar Copenhageni. Serovar Pomona appears to produce clinical and probably subclinical disease, whereas serovar Hardjobovis appears to cause only subclinical disease, although the relative risk of disease causation has not been determined. Clinical disease is usually manifested by haemolysis, jaundice, renal lesions, haemoglobinuria and often by sudden death. Renal lesions are commonly observed at slaughter and many are associated with leptospiral infections. Occupationally, slaughterhouse workers appear to beat greatest risk of contracting the disease from deer. Vaccination produces serological responses, but its effectiveness in protecting against disease, and prevention or reduction of shedding in urine, has not yet been confirmed in deer. More robust knowledge of the epidemiology of leptospiral infections in deer, and the effectiveness of vaccines and vaccination regimes, is needed to assist the deer industry to develop a strategy to manage this disease.

The incidence and aetiology of clinical bovine mastitis on 14 farms in Northland, New Zealand

Abstract AIM: To estimate the incidence of clinical mastitis and the frequency of isolation of mastitis-causing organisms from clinical cases in one lactation season (July 2005 to May 2006) on 14 dairy farms from the Northland region of New Zealand. METHODS: Cases of clinical mastitis were determined by trained farm personnel who recorded the identity of affected cows. Pooled milk samples from affected quarter(s) were aseptically collected by the farm personnel, for microbiology. Mean numbers of affected cows and quarters were compared at the population and farm level per 305 cow-days-at-risk (DAR). RESULTS: One or more cases of clinical mastitis occurred in 559/3,765 (14.8%) lactating cows. The average incidence of clinical mastitis was 0.19 cases per 305 DAR. The incidence in rear quarters (56.2%) was 1.3 times (p=0.027) that of front quarters (43.8%). The incidence of clinical mastitis and numbers of affected quarters were signifi cantly infl uenced by the stage of lactation (higher in early lactation), age (higher in older cows) and farm. At the cow level, the most common isolates were Staphylococcus aureus (23.7%) and Streptococcus uberis (23.3%). No causative organisms were identifi ed in 19.9% of the samples. Each cow had an average of 1.8 quarters affected during a case of clinical mastitis. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated a higher incidence of staphylococcal clinical mastitis on dairy farms from Northland than has been reported in other regions of New Zealand.

Effects of grain, fructose, and histidine on ruminal pH and fermentation products during an induced subacute acidosis protocol

The effects of grain, fructose, and histidine on ruminal pH and fermentation products were studied in dairy cattle during an induced subacute acidosis protocol. Thirty Holstein heifers were randomly allocated to 5 treatment groups: (1) control (no grain); (2) grain [fed at a crushed triticale dry matter intake (DMI) of 1.2% of body weight (BW)]; (3) grain (0.8% of BW DMI)+fructose (0.4% of BW DMI); (4) grain (1.2% of BW DMI)+histidine (6 g/head); and (5) grain (0.8% of BW DMI)+fructose (0.4% of BW DMI)+histidine (6 g/head) in a partial factorial arrangement. Heifers were fed 1 kg of grain daily with ad libitum access to ryegrass silage and alfalfa hay for 10 d. Feed was withheld for 14 h before challenge day, on which heifers were fed 200 g of alfalfa hay and then the treatment diets immediately thereafter. Rumen samples were collected 5 min after diet ingestion, 60 min later, and at 3 subsequent 50-min intervals. Grain decreased ruminal pH and increased ammonia, total volatile fatty acid (VFA), acetate, butyrate, propionate, and valerate concentrations compared with controls. The addition of grain had no effect on ruminal D- and L-lactate concentrations. Fructose markedly decreased ruminal pH and markedly increased D- and L-lactate concentrations. Fructose increased total VFA and butyrate and decreased valerate concentrations. Although histidine did not have a marked effect on ruminal fermentation, increased concentrations of histamine were observed following feeding. This study demonstrates that the substitution of some grain for fructose can lower ruminal pH and increase VFA and lactate concentrations, warranting further investigation into the role of sugars on the risk of acidosis in dairy cattle.
