Fast neutral injection on a mirror hot-ion target plasma, Part II: Transfer of a target, a possible solution for d.c. operation

R. Bir; J. Jacquinot; C. Leloup; J.P. Poffe; M. de Pretis

The possibility of transferring a target plasma into a confinement region is considered. This method avoids the gas problem and reduction of access which are usually associated with the target production in situ. The transfer is shown to be feasible with good efficiency at the expense of a complicated set of pulsed magnets.

Fast neutral injection on a mirror hot-ion target plasma, Part I: Plasma parameters and injection requirements – General

J. Jacquinot; C. Leloup; J.P. Poffe; M. de Pretis

Problems related to the definition of a target plasma for fast neutral injection into a mirror machine are discussed. Plasma parameters and magnetic configuration are first examined in the light of instability theory; the study is concerned with: the required neutral beam current; the beam energy modulation connected to the evolution of the ion distribution function; the evolution of the plasma geometry associated with the vacuum requirements; and the deduction of suitable plasma parameters. This ensemble leads to the conclusions that an experiment to study the stability of mirror machines in a quasi-steady state relevant to reactor regimes is possible starting from a reasonable extension of present laboratory plasmas.

A study of the magnetic well created by a Yin-Yang configuration

C. Leloup; J. Waldes

A systematic study has been carried out varying the parameters of the Yin-Yang configuration in order to obtain the maximum mirror ratio, ?, for the last closed nested isobar of the magnetic well. It has been found that the maximum values of ? obtained are about 2.5, even when the mirror ratio along a line of force attains a large value ( 5). Optimization of the access for fast neutral injection is included.
