Dynamic instability of truncated conical shells, with variable modulus of elasticity, under periodic compressive forces

C. Massalas; A. Dalamangas; G. Tzivanidis

Abstract The dynamic instability of truncated conical shells with variable modulus of elasticity, subjected to periodic axial compressive forces is studied. The formulation of the problem is based on the dynamic version of Donnell type basic equations with bending deformations neglected before instability. By applying Galerkins method, the basic equations are reduced to a system of coupled Mathieu-Hill equations, from which the principal instability regions are determined by using Bolotins method. The free vibration problem as well as the classical buckling problem of the shell considered are also discussed.

Non-linear vibrations of a shallow cylindrical panel on a non-linear elastic foundation

C. Massalas; N. Kafousias

Abstract The influence of large amplitude on the free vibrations of a long shallow cylindrical panel with straight edges clamped and resting on a non-linear elastic foundation is investigated. The equilibrium of the panel when subjected to an external pressure is also studied.

Thermoelastic vibrations of a semi-infinite strip

C. Massalas

Abstract The forced vibrations of a thermoelastic strip ( x 1 ϵ [0, l ], x 2 ⩾ 0) produced by a prescribed heating at the boundary x 2 = 0 are considered. The analysis is based on classical coupled thermoelastic theory (plane strain) and finite Fourier transforms. The solution of the problem under discussion is expressed in terms of the Lame scalar and vector potentials.

Dynamic behaviour of a simply supported circular cylindrical panel subjected to an initial bending moment

C. Massalas; K. Soldatos

Abstract The vibration of cylindrical panels with simply supported boundary conditions in the presence of an initial bending moment is investigated. The analysis is based on the theory of Herrmann and Armenakas. The results for the stability and free vibration of the panels are obtained as special cases.

Propagation of thermoelastic waves in an infinite circular cylinder with thermal relaxation

C. Massalas; G. Tsolakidis

An analysis is presented of the propagation of thermoelastic waves in a circular cylinder of an infinite length. The analysis is based on the generalized theory proposed by Lord and Shulman. The solution of the problem under discussion is expressed in terms of the Lame scalar and vector potentials and analytical expressions are given for the wave motion characteristics.
