Abstract The graft copolymerization of methyl acrylate (MA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) onto sodium alginate (SA) with ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) as a redox initiator in an aqueous medium has been studied. The optimized reaction conditions affording the maximum percentage of grafting of MA and MMA onto SA are determined by varying the concentrations of nitric acid, ceric ammonium nitrate, SA, MA and MMA, and also temperature and time. A comparison of the reactivity of the acrylate monomers with that of acrylonitrile has been made.

Sodium salt of partially carboxymethylated starch (Na-PCMS, DS=0.317) was graft copolymerized with acrylonitrile (AN) using ceric ammonium nitr-ate (CAN) as an initiator. The optimized reaction conditions affording the maximum percentage of grafting are determined by varying the concentrations of nitric acid, initiator and monomer together with temperature and time. The results are discussed.

Abstract In order to study the effect of degree of substitution, the grafting of acrylonitrile (AN) onto sodium salt of partially carboxymethylated amylose (Na-PCMA) samples of varying degrees of substitution has been carried out using ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) as an initiator. The percentage of grafting (% G), percentage grafting efficiency (% GE) and % add-on are found to decrease with increase in degree of substitution. The molecular weights of the grafted homopolymer (PAN) have been determined from viscosity measurements and are found to decrease with increase in degree of substitution of Na-PCMA sample. The results on the thermal studies of all the Na-PCMA samples and their graft copolymers also showed that the thermal stability decreases with increasing degree of substitution of Na-PCMA.
