Polymer/carbon nanotube composite patterns via laser induced forward transfer

Christos Boutopoulos; C. Pandis; K. Giannakopoulos; P. Pissis; I. Zergioti

Direct and high spatial resolution printing of polymer/carbon nanotube (CNT) composite layers has been demonstrated by means of laser induced forward transfer (LIFT). Laser irradiation of composite target materials, such as poly(acrylic acid)/CNT and polyvinylpyrrolidone/CNT, enabled dry deposition of well resolved composite pixels onto glass substrates. The dispersion of the CNT into the deposited composite pixels was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The LIFT technique was also employed for the accurate deposition of polymer/CNT composite pixels onto aluminum microelectrodes for the fabrication of chemical sensors based on polymer/CNT compounds.

Water absorption in chitosan rapidly increases when the deacetylation degree decreases between 85 and 45%. This seems to contradict the fact that water absorption in chitin is much lower than that of chitosan. The aim of this paper is to understand this feature by measuring the main parameters affecting equilibrium water content. Since swelling capacity depends on the water-polymer interaction, the Flory Huggins interaction parameter was evaluated, finding small or null dependence on the deacetylation degree. Other factor influencing elastic energy is chain stiffness related to the elastic modulus that was measured as a function of deacetylation degree. Besides, crystalline structure was measured by X-ray diffraction patterns as a characteristic of cross-linking density. These observations led us to conclude that the instability of crystals during the swelling process increases with decreasing deacetylation degree, explaining the high equilibrium water content of low deacetylation chitosans.

ABSTRACT The effects of multiwall carbon nanotube (CNT) inclusions on the crystalline structure of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), and on the dielectric properties of PVDF/CNT nanocomposites (NCs), prepared by melt mixing, were investigated by employing X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and dielectric spectroscopy techniques. Our results imply that, in the NCs, the formation of β-phase crystals depends on specific compression treatment in the melt and fast cooling. Dielectric measurements on NCs, with CNT concentrations below the electrical percolation threshold, reveal that the dielectric strength of the two relaxation processes in the amorphous phase and dielectric permittivity, ϵ′, measured within the broad temperature range from −150 °C to 60 °C, increase strongly with increasing CNT concentration. This enhancement of amorphous PVDF polarizability has been attributed to the increase of the local electric field, due to local polarization generated at the surface of conductive inclusions/CNT clusters.

We report the fabrication of microbiosensors by Laser Induced Forward Transfer. Two kinds of biosensors are discussed: capacitive biosensors and polyaniline amperometric biosensors. Laser fabrication allows for low-cost, maskless patterning with the potential of miniaturization.
