Effect of etching interruptions on tracks formation in plastics

G. Baroni; S. Di Liberto; G. Romano; C. Sgarbi; M.C. Tabasso

Abstract The effect of etching interruptions on track formation has been studied in nitrocellulose plastic sheets using α-particle tracks. The “step effect” is remarkable on some parameters of the tracks while on others, as the lengthening with development time — that is the most useful in identification of high ionizing tracks — it seems to be absent. An attempt is made to interpret this effect on the basis of the known dissolution properties of polymers.

Track discrimination of low-energy nuclei in plastics

G. Baroni; S. Di Liberto; S. Petrera; G. Romano; C. Sgarbi

Abstract The efficiency of nitrocellulose-plastic sheets as external detectors is studied as a function of impinging-particles angle, energy-loss rate and other experimental conditions also in the presence of a high background of neutral and singly-charged particles. The discrimination among low-energy nuclei (2⩽ Z ⩽6) with a two-step method of analysis was achieved with the definition of a parameter ( w ), connected with the measured etched length of the tracks, that ensures their almost certain assignment to the various nuclear species.

An interactive system for emulsion data acquisition

Giustina Baroni; Sergio Di Liberto; Paolo Ginobbi; F. Meddi; S. Petrera; G. Romano; C. Sgarbi

We describe an interactive system, based on a micro-processor, for the acquisition and elaboration of nuclear emulsion measurements. The device consists of a Koritska R4 microscope coupled with a telecamera and with a motor driven stage for automatic displacement in the three directions. Both the pair of internal coordinates and the three external coordinates are digitized. The interactive management of the system is carried out with a PDP11/34.

Curvative measurements in nuclear emulsions

Ernesto Lamanna; G. Romano; C. Sgarbi

Abstract We show the results obtained on curvature measurements performed on tracks of particles bent in emulsion by different magnetic fields and derive the conditions yielding the best estimate of both curvature and error.

Multicharged particle emission in the disintegration of aluminium induced by 800 mev electrons

Sergio Di Liberto; F. Meddi; G. Romano; Giovanni Rosa; C. Sgarbi

Abstract The disintegration of aluminium nuclei by 800 MeV electrons is studied using plastic detectors. Angular and energy distributions of emitted Li, Be and B isotopes are presented. The compatibility of the results with a two-stage process (cascade and evaporation) is studied with the aid of a Monte Carlo calculation.
