We report the observation of 16 cosmic ray events with a mean energy of 1.5 × 10¹⁹ eV via radio pulses originating from the interaction of the cosmic ray air shower with the Antarctic geomagnetic field, a process known as geosynchrotron emission. We present measurements in the 300-900 MHz range, which are the first self-triggered, first ultrawide band, first far-field, and the highest energy sample of cosmic ray events collected with the radio technique. Their properties are inconsistent with current ground-based geosynchrotron models. The emission is 100% polarized in the plane perpendicular to the projected geomagnetic field. Fourteen events are seen to have a phase inversion due to reflection of the radio beam off the ice surface, and two additional events are seen directly from above the horizon. Based on a likelihood analysis, we estimate angular pointing precision of order 2° for the event arrival directions.

We found that the conventional model of orbital-ordering of 3x(2)-r(2)/3y(2)-r(2) type in the e(g) states of La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 is incompatible with measurements of linear dichroism in the Mn 2p-edge x-ray absorption, whereas these e(g) states exhibit predominantly cross-type orbital ordering of x(2)-z(2)/y(2)-z(2). LDA+U band-structure calculations reveal that such a cross-type orbital-ordering results from a combined effect of antiferromagnetic structure, Jahn-Teller distortion, and on-site Coulomb interactions.

Organic-metal interfaces are key elements in organic-based electronics. The energy-level alignment between the metal Fermi level and the molecular orbital levels determines the injection barriers for the charge carriers at the interfaces, which are crucial for the performance of organic electronic devices. Dipole formation at the interfaces has been regarded as the main factor that affects the energy-level alignment. Several models have been proposed for the mechanism of dipole formation in the context of the interface between organic molecules and a bulk metal crystal surface, at which surface states were mostly used to probe the interfacial properties. Here we report that when the bulk metal crystal is replaced by a uniform metal thin film, the resulting two-dimensional quantum-well states will be able to not only probe but also modify the interfacial electronic structures, such as gap states, that have no counterpart at the organic-bulk crystal interface.

We set the first limits on the ultra-high energy (UHE) neutrino fluence at energies greater than 10{sup 9} GeV from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) based on data from the second flight of the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA). During the 31 day flight of ANITA-II, 26 GRBs were recorded by Swift or Fermi. Of these, we analyzed the 12 GRBs which occurred during quiet periods when the payload was away from anthropogenic activity. In a blind analysis, we observe 0 events on a total background of 0.0044 events in the combined prompt window for all 12 low-background bursts. We also observe 0 events from the remaining 14 bursts. We place a 90% confidence level limit on the E{sup -4} prompt neutrino fluence between 10{sup 8} GeV < E < 10{sup 12} GeV of E{sup 4}{Phi} = 2.5 x 10{sup 17} GeV{sup 3} cm{sup -2} from GRB090107A. This is the first reported limit on the UHE neutrino fluence from GRBs above 10{sup 9} GeV, and the strongest limit above 10{sup 8} GeV.

O K- and Mn L2,3-edges x-ray absorption spectra of orthorhombic TbMnO3 single crystals show strong polarization dependence, in contrast with results of previous experiments on orthorhombic LaMnO3 and DyMnO3 thin films that show nearly isotropic spectral structure. First-principles calculations reveal that TbMnO3 exhibits a zigzag eg orbital ordering ground state. The highly distorted MnO6 octahedron and orbital ordering in TbMnO3 produce highly anisotropic Mn–O bonding within the ab plane, a frustration of the magnetic ordering, and the formation of complicated incommensurate magnetic structures.
