Low temperature ion substitution in soda-lime glass by means of an electric field

Abstract In this paper we report two experiments in reducing the temperature of the melt from which ions may be substituted into a soda-lime glass. In the first case the ion-exchange layer increased the refractive index of the glass, making a light-confining waveguide, and in the other experiment the refractive index of the substituted film was reduced, producing a “leaky” guide. Some brief comments on the use of aqueous solutions to ion dope glasses are also included.
