Analyzing relationship between ERP utilization and lean manufacturing maturity of Turkish SMEs

Cagatay Iris; Ufuk Cebeci

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand how effective Turkish small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) use enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems in module aspect and to assess the adherence to lean manufacturing requirements. Obtaining each efficiency result separately is not adequate to make an inference about relationship between ERP and lean practices. Hence, a relational model is developed to analyze correlation between use of ERP and lean manufacturing implementation in white goods manufacturing SMEs of Istanbul, Turkey. Design/methodology/approach – The examination of the proposed conceptual framework is made by statistical analyses. In parallel, leveling efficiency of each enterprise requires an expert analysis in order to obtain a fair comparison. Hence, authors have visited each facility to evaluate performance of ERP efficiency and lean manufacturing applications. In Istanbul region, 53 of total listed SMEs are visited. The questionnaire survey is designed by considering differ...

A Survey on the Ship Loading Problem

Cagatay Iris; Dario Pacino

Recent statistics show that large container terminals can process more than 30 million containers a year, and are constantly in search for the better ways to optimize processing time, deliver high quality and profitable services. Some of the terminal decisions are, however, dependent on externalities. One of those is the ship loading process. Based on the stowage plan received by liner shippers, terminal operators plan the execution of load and discharge operations. In this paper we present a literature review for the Ship Loading Problem, where stowage and loading sequencing and scheduling are integrated to improve the efficiency of the ship handling operations. We present a survey of the state-of-the-art methods and of the available benchmarking data.

A Fuzzy Linear Programming Approach for Aggregate Production Planning

Cagatay Iris; Emre Cevikcan

Aggregate Production Planning (APP) is considered as an important stage in production systems, since it links operations with strategies and plays a key role in enterprise resource planning and organizational integration. An effective APP should not only provide the minimization of production and inventory costs, but also increase the level of service available to the customers. When maintaining APP, some of cost and demand parameters cannot be frequently determined as crisp values. Fuzzy logic is utilized in many engineering applications so as to handle imprecise data. This chapter provides a mathematical programming framework for aggregate production planning problem under imprecise data environment. After providing background information about APP problem, together with fuzzy linear programming, the fuzzy linear programming model of APP is solved on an illustrative example for different α-cut values.

Mathematical programming formulations for the strategic berth template problem

Cagatay Iris; Eduardo Lalla-Ruiz; Jasmine Siu Lee Lam; Stefan Voß

Abstract The strategic berth template problem (SBTP) is an important strategic problem arising at the seaside of container terminals. It aims at supporting terminal managers in deciding which calling ships should be accepted, and it covers determining the most appropriate berth template for the accepted incoming traffic. In this work, we propose and evaluate two formulations. One is based on a conceptual but yet unexplored mathematical model and another is based on a generalized set-packing problem (GSP). Both formulations are assessed on a well-defined set of problem instances. The results indicate that the GSP-based optimization model exhibits a relevant performance, providing optimal solutions within reasonable time for most of the instances considered.
