The findings for a baseline assessment for a community-based HIV/STD prevention intervention for commercial sex workers (CSWs) and managers of the establishments that employ them in the Philippines is presented in this study. CSW knowledge, attitudes, behaviours and establishment policies concerning HIV prevention were assessed. Baseline assessments are part of an iterative process that will be used to modify the planned intervention. The preliminary findings point to the importance of an intervention that stresses changes in establishment policies and expectations as a means of reducing risk behaviours associated with HIV/STD transmission.

Patterns of adolescent alcohol, cigarette, and marijuana use over a 6-month period

Carl D. Sneed; Mary Jane Rotheram-Borus; Vicki J. Ebin; C. Kevin Malotte

In the current study, alcohol, cigarette, and marijuana use among adolescents (N= 794, 48.6% female) was assessed at two time points, and four patterns of use were identified: (1) abstainers: no lifetime use; (2) new users: no use at baseline but had used by the follow-up period; (3) experimenters: use prior to the baseline but no use in the period up to the follow-up; and (4) consistent users: self-report of use prior to the baseline and the follow-up. Mean levels of psychosocial variables (mastery, self-esteem, and parental social support) were compared across the four patterns of use for each substance. Only analyses including parental social support as the dependent variable were significant. Adolescents with higher levels of social support were more likely to be classified as abstainers or experimenters of alcohol than consistent users. More frequent users of cigarettes at baseline were likely to be classified as frequent users at the follow-up. The discussion focuses on the identification of the situational context of substance use for alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana.

Correlates and Implications for Agreeableness in Children

Carl D. Sneed

Abstract This study is an examination of the relationship between agreeableness and other constructs related to childrens social relationships. Third through 6th graders (N = 76; 46 boys, 30 girls) completed self-reports on agreeableness (based on the adult version of the NEO Personality Inventory Manual; Costa & McCrae, 1985), social skills (Social Skills Rating System for Children; Gresham & Elliot, 1991). empathy (Feshbach, 1990) and trust (Childrens Trust Scale; Imber, 1973). Using multiple regression, agreeableness was predicted by social skills, empathy, and trust for girls. There were no significant predictors of agreeableness for boys. The discussion focuses on the mutability of childhood personality.

The Beliefs Adults and Children Hold About Television and Video Games

Carl D. Sneed; Mark A. Runco

In Phase 1 of this study, we asked 23 parents between the ages of 30 and 52 years and 26 children between the ages of 10 and 19 years to list effects of television and video games on children. A questionnaire was developed using the most frequently given responses (e.g., television influences childrens aggressive behavior, verbal abilities, or time with friends). In Phase 2, this questionnaire was administered to different groups of parents and children and a control group of adults without offspring (N = 204) who were asked to rate the influence of each item on the questionnaire. Multivariate analyses of variance indicated that there were similarities and differences among the groups. For example, parents and other adults held similar beliefs about the influence of television, but parents held more positive beliefs about the influence of video games than the other adults. Children held more positive beliefs about the influence of television than parents, but parents and children held similar beliefs about the influence of video games.
