The objective of the present work was to evaluate the efficiency of ethylene glycol on criopreservation of canine semen, considering its possible deleterious effects upon semen motility, vigor and morphology at the pre and post freezing stages, using a tris-egg yolk extender. Four adult german shepards were used as donors. Samples were obtained by digital manipulation, and only ejaculates presenting a minimum of 90% motility and 5 (0-5) vigor and no more than 35% of total morphological defects were considered. Ethylene glycol concentrations tested were 0.25, 0.50 and 1.0M and 0.80M glycerol served as control. Motility and vigor were evaluated in the rich fraction, after first and second dilution, after 1 hour of stabilization at 4oC and after thawing. Sperm morphology was examined in the fresh sample and after thawing in each of the treatments. There were no detectable differences among the groups in sperm motility and morphology after thawing. There were no differences in vigor among the 0.25, 0.50M ethylene glycol and the 0.8M glycerol, but the 1M ethylene glycol had lower vigor scores after thawing. We conclude that ethylene glycol can be used as a cryoprotectant in the concentration of 0.25, 0.50 and 1.0M instead of glycerol.

Porem, a zearalenona aumentou (p<0,05) o volume vulvar, o peso e o comprimento do trato reprodutivo. Os resultados indicam efeitos estrogenicos associados a zearalenona e perdas em produtividade as aflatoxinas presentes nas dietas.

A meta-analysis was carried out to evaluate the association between backfat thickness and sow body condition in gestation and lactation. The database assembled 14 publications from 2000 to 2006. The meta-analysis was accomplished by graphical analysis, correlation, and analysis of variance. The correlation between backfat thickness (BT) and body weight was 0.16 (P<0.01), with protein mass was 0.48 (P<0.01) and leptin concentration was 0.88 (P<0.01). The correlation between the backfat variation during and in lactation (VBTl) and body weight was -0.21 (P<0.01), with body weight variation in lactation was 0.34 (P<0.01) and with fat mass variation in lactation was 0.70 (P<0.01). The correlation between BT and born alive litter size was 0.46 (P<0.01), between VBTl and piglets body weight at seven days of age was 0.95 (P<0.01). In the gestation, the BD was influenced by the body weight and protein mass. However, in lactation the VBTl was influenced by the body weight variation and fat mass. The leptin concentration at farrowing was positively correlated with backfat depth. The BT was influenced by born alive litter size and piglets birth weight. The VBTl was influenced by piglets weight at seven days old and litter weight gain. In conclusion, there is a significant relation between backfat thickness and body variables of the sows in gestation and lactation.

The objective of this study was to evaluate animal performance, carcass characteristics and costs for pigs fed diets adjusted to Brazilian conditions, through the model InraPorc®. We used 36 barrows and 36 females, during the growing and finishing in a completely randomized design. The treatments were control diets and diets adjusted for both males and females. The feeding program and the animal profile were added to the model parameterization and define strategies and nutritional feed in the diets adjusted. The performance and carcass traits were not affected by treatments. The average cost to feed the animals that received the control diet was higher in 3.4% and 2.4% for the males and females respectively. Comparing the diets, the average cost to feed the animals that received the control diet was 2.9% higher. Net income was R

An experiment was carried out to evaluate the post-weaning performance of piglets fed during 42 days diets with or without citric extracts. Thirty-two weanling piglets were used, with initial average live weight of 6.2 kg (± 0.87), during one period of 42 days. A complete randomized block design was utilized, with two treatments: control diet CD, and CD + 750 mg kg-1 of citric extracts (ascorbic acid + bioflavonoids), with eight replicates and two animals per experimental unit. Final live weight was 4% higher (p 0.05) by the citric extracts. Addition of citric extracts containing bioflavonoids and ascorbic acid in diets can improve piglet post-weaning performance by increasing voluntary feed intake.

Índices produtivos de fêmeas suínas alimentadas com dietas de gestação e lactação suplementadas com óleos essenciais de orégano e alecrim: avaliação de leitegadas

Carlos Augusto Rigon Rossi; Marcelo Soares

Abstract – This work aimed at meta-analyzing the association of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) with the performance and the carcass and meat quality in pigs ( Sus scrofa domesticus ). The database used assembled 15 scientificpapers, published from 1999 to 2006, comprising 216 diets and 5,223 animals. Meta‑analysis was carried out by graphical examination (to observe biological coherency), correlation (to identify correlated variables) and variance-covariance analysis of the data. The analysis of variance included only meat and carcass variables with stronger correlation to CLA consumption by the animals, and encodings to inter and intra‑experimental effects. The inclusion of CLA in diets showed a negative correlation with feed efficiency and a positive correlation with feed intake and weight gain. Conjugated linoleic acid-suplemented diets for pigs did not affect feed intake, weight gain and feed efficiency.Conjugated linoleic acid increased the lean meat content in the carcass in 9%. Average backfat thickness also varied according to conjugated linoleic acid consumption. Conjugated linoleic acid increases lean meat content and reduces backfat thickness, without influencing performance and meat quality in pigs.Index terms:

The study evaluated the production index of sows fed diets containing a blend of essential oils. A total of 250 sows of parturition orders (PO) between one to eight, with two experimental diets during gestation and in the lactation (control diet with 200ppm and essential oils). The experimental design was a randomized blocks in a 2x2 factorial arrangement (treatments during pregnancy and lactation) with the sows and piglets as experimental unit. The average live weight of piglets at weaning and number of weaned were 8.0% and 3.8% higher (P<0.05), respectively for piglets from mothers supplemented with essential oils. The body temperature of females of the control and PO five, evaluated in the pre-parturition and in the parturition, was 4.4% and 3.5% higher (P<0.05) to essential oils, respectively. The addition of essential oils in the diet of sows in late pregnancy and early lactation increased the number of piglets weaned and litter weight. Females supplemented with essential oils, did not show temperature and clinical signs consistent with disgalactia.
