Capuchin monkeys show generalized identity (GI) when tests are preceded by repeated shifts of simple discrimination training (RSSD) with stimuli used in tests. The present study evaluated if that facilitating effect of RSSD training could be due exclusively to the previous contact with the testing stimuli. It was given to a male capuchin monkey four GI tests with objects: Test 1 - an identity conditional discrimination task with new stimuli; Test 2 - with the same stimuli used in Test 1 after RSSD training to induce conditional control; Test 3 - with new stimuli, freely manipulated by the subject previously; and Test 4 - with the same stimuli used in Test 3 after RSSD training. The subjects performance reached the learning criterion in Tests 2 and 4. RSSD training was more effective than free manipulation to produce immediate matching to sample with new stimuli.

Experimental studies have shown positive effects of dialogic reading of picture books (reading aloud interspersed with prompts and feedback for verbalizations by the listener) on the vocabulary and verbal expression of small children. This study assessed the effect of dialogic reading on the comprehension of a childrens novel by three children aged 7-8 years, using a single-subject reversal design. In Condition A, the text was read without intervention. In Condition B, reading was interspersed with dialogic interventions based on narrative functions. Comprehension was superior in all measures in Condition B for the two participants who underwent the B-A-B design, however, not for the participant who underwent the A-B-A design. We discuss possible interactions of dialogic reading with characteristics of text genre and the need for systematic replications with more sessions and reversals of conditions.

The present paper aimed to present Tomasellos approach about human-cognition evolution and a derived theory of acquisition and development of linguistic-symbolic competences. Tomasello proposes that symbolic acquisition and development depend on an exclusively human cultural cognition derived, however, from primate biological adaptations. These approaches represent some alternatives to traditional treatments for human cognitive and linguistic-symbolic development, considering that they: (1) highlight biological and cultural features as determinants of human cognition; (2) consider human activities as essentially symbolic; (3) offer a new conception of language.

The approach of Tomasello to the evolution of human cognition attempts to integrate biological, behavioral, and cultural processes within a sole explicative system. A fundamental critic towards it has been the need of a better elaboration of the concept of intentionality. The present paper aimed to: (1) analyze Tomasellos use of the concept of intentionality, and (2) establish dialogues between this use and theories of intentionality in the philosophy of mind and functionalist approaches to human cognition in behavior psychology. The results of this paper indicate that Tomasellos use of the concept of intentionality is compatible to these theories and approaches. Morevover, Tomasellos approach may extend the investigation of more complex symbolic processes than the ones traditionally investigated by behavior psychology.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the learning of ordinal classes through the training of only one sequence of stimuli. Five children, four to five years old participated. Sets of stimuli with abstract shapes, representing the numerical sequence from one to five were presented via a microcomputer. Once the criteria for success were reached, tests were administered. All of the participants reached the criteria for success during the baseline phase, and responded readily to the tests for transitivity and connectivity. Generalization also occurred for two novel ordinal classes. During the retest phase, three children responded consistent with prior training, whereas one child responded partially. This study is a contribution to a functional analysis of the process of learning of numeric repertoires.

Deficits in joint attention (JA), characterized as response to joint attention (RJA) and initiation of joint attention (IJA), have been related to language problems seen in people with autism. The establishment of the behavior of others as discriminative/reinforcer conditioned stimuli can be important for JA. This study investigated functional relationships that can occur between the establishment of another persons behavior as discriminative/reinforcer conditioned stimuli and RJA, IJA, mand and tact repertoires in three children with autism. Compliance repertoires were trained and the reinforcing/ discriminative effectiveness of social conditional stimuli, RJA, IJA, mand and tact were pre-tested. Based on the initial assessment diferente baselines were constructed between the participants to initiate the training of nonexistent repertoires and to be able to evaluate the effects of one or more repertoires on the others. The results suggest a functional independence between the acquisition of RAC, mand and tact and the establishment of responses to social stimuli.
