Design of Compact Wideband Manifold-Coupled Multiplexers

Carlos Carceller; Pablo Soto; Vicente E. Boria; Marco Guglielmi; Jordi Gil

The design of manifold-coupled multiplexers for wideband applications is considered in this paper. A systematic procedure, based on the sequential connection of filters to the manifold and subsequent adjustment of the interconnection elements, is presented. The filters are attached to the manifold without using stubs in order to minimize the effect of spurious resonances. The interconnection elements, the manifold, and the remaining filters are considered as the first inverter of each new filter that is attached. This technique has been applied to several practical examples. The obtained results validate the proposed design methodology.

Design of Hybrid Folded Rectangular Waveguide Filters With Transmission Zeros Below the Passband

Carlos Carceller; Pablo Soto; Vicente E. Boria; Marco Guglielmi

The design and physical implementation of hybrid folded rectangular waveguide filters providing multiple transmission zeros (TZs) below the passband are considered in this paper. These structures offer great flexibility to locate the TZs in a wide frequency range. Different implementations have been considered, each one offering certain advantages in terms of ease of manufacture, number of TZs, and their separation from the passband. A simple design procedure is also described. Measurements of a manufactured five-pole filter prototype and simulations fully validate the novel configurations proposed in this study.

Practical design of rectangular waveguide filters with a capacitive building block providing an extra transmission zero

Pablo Soto; V. E. Boria; Carlos Carceller; S. Cogollos; Marco Guglielmi; D. Smacchia

This paper faces up the practical design of a class of rectangular waveguide filters using a recently proposed capacitive coupling scheme. Such a coupling scheme creates an E-plane stub in the waveguide resonator, and provides an extra transmission zero. First, a novel 2D building block including the capacitive window and the stub is identified. A parametric analysis of this block is then carried out to evaluate its performance, and also to obtain design guidelines for its use in practical applications. Finally, such guidelines are illustrated with the EM-based design of a novel constant-width filter topology of order 5, which provides 4 transmission zeros without cross-couplings and non-resonating nodes. The designed filter is fully validated with measurements of a manufactured prototype.

Direct full-wave modeling of bi-dimensional structures combining E-plane and H-plane analysis techniques

Carlos Carceller; Pablo Soto; V. E. Boria; Jordi Gil

This paper presents an analytical method for the efficient full-wave modeling of bi-dimensional structures by combining the results of purely E- and H-plane analysis techniques. It is based on frequency and boundary-condition transformations, and is used to compute the fields and the Generalized Admittance Matrix of the structure. A complex 3D geometry including a bi-dimensional block is analyzed, in order to illustrate the advantages of the novel full-wave analysis technique.

Capacitive Obstacle Realizing Multiple Transmission Zeros for In-Line Rectangular Waveguide Filters

Carlos Carceller; Pablo Soto; Vicente E. Boria; Marco Guglielmi

This paper presents a capacitive obstacle for rectangular waveguide filters capable of realizing multiple transmission zeros (TZs). By combining a capacitive window with multiple thin stubs, a filter designer has the ability to control the total coupling implemented by the obstacle, and the frequency location of the TZs generated. The resulting structure is compact, and can be employed at the input/output and intermediate stages of direct-coupled-resonator filters. This letter includes a parametric analysis of the obstacle and practical design guidelines. To validate its practical application, an in-line five-pole filter realizing three TZs has been successfully realized.

Computer-aided design (CAD) of filters and multiplexers for passive inter-modulation (PIM) set-ups

Pablo Soto; Davide Smacchia; Carlos Carceller; Vicente E. Boria; Marco Guglielmi

This paper is focused on the computer-aided design (CAD) of filters and manifold-coupled multiplexers for passive inter-modulation (PIM) measurement test beds. After a brief summary of the demanding requirements to be satisfied by these components, two novel topologies of rectangular waveguide filters conceived for this particular application are presented. Next, the procedure carried out for the design of the filters and involved multiplexers is outlined. Finally, the performance of two wideband manifold-coupled multiplexers for PIM measurement set-ups (operating at Ku- and K-bands) is fully validated with experimental measurements.

Design of advanced waveguide filters for passive intermodulation measurement setups

Pablo Soto; Carlos Carceller; Jesus Ruiz; S. Cogollos; Vicente E. Boria; Marco Guglielmi; Davide Smacchia

This paper addresses the design and development of advanced waveguide filters for passive intermodulation (PIM) measurement set-ups. After describing the severe specifications that such filters must met, some key guidelines to choose a particular filter configuration, response and layout are discussed. The design procedure is also briefly described. A design example, which is included in a manufactured waveguide multiplexer for measuring rejected PIM, is also shown.

In this paper, we present FEST3D, a powerful software tool capable of efficiently analyzing most passive components commonly used in space and ground applications. By combining different approaches of the Boundary Integral - Resonant Mode Expansion (BI-RME) method, this tool is able to perform an accurate EM modeling of components with complicated geometries in extremely short computational times (orders of magnitude less than software tools based on 3D segmentation techniques).
