Inorganic and Bioinorganic Reaction Mechanisms: Application of High-Pressure Techniques

Rudi van Eldik; Carlos Dücker-Benfer; Florian Thaler

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses inorganic and bio-inorganic reaction mechanisms and applications of high-pressure techniques. Almost all chemical reactions in solution exhibit characteristic pressure dependence over a moderate pressure range of a few hundred megapascals. The general understanding of ligand-substitution mechanisms of square planar and octahedral complexes since the earlier concepts were developed and benefited greatly from the numerous high-pressure kinetic studies performed during the past two decades. Solvent exchange processes are the most fundamental substitution reactions that characterize the liability and reaction mechanism of a metal center within coordination geometry. Solvent exchange mechanisms are not only of fundamental interest in coordination chemistry, their understanding is of direct interest to the application of certain metal complexes as contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging. Application of pulse-radiolysis techniques revealed that the intramolecular and intermolecular electron-transfer reactions all exhibit a significant acceleration with increasing pressure.

Die Zaubervorlesung: „Chemie am laufenden Band”

Bernd Müller; Michael Galle; Thorsten Schneppensieper; Carlos Dücker-Benfer; Rudi van Eldik

Every year at the start of the winter semester at the Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nurnberg, the lecture „Chemical Magic Tricks” is held. In time and due to generation changes, the nature of this event has changed. From a classical experimental lecture it was transformed into a multi media show, which is very popular among the public and even made its way into television. Our aim with this article is to pass our experience and further information required on to those interested to present such an advertisement event for chemistry.
