The paper aims to analyze and evaluate the medical wastes management in the cities of Vacacai river basin in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Health care facilities (hospitals, health centers and clinical laboratories) were surveyed to provide information about the management, segregation, generation, storage and disposal of medical wastes. The results about management aspects indicate that practices in most healthcare facilities do not comply with the principles stated in Brazilian legislation (CONAMA Resolution N. 283/2001). Average generation rate of total waste in the hospitals was estimated to be 3,245 kg/bed.day (17.6% from Group A). A total medical waste generated in the study area was estimated to be 182,640 kg/month (22.1% from Group A).

This study aimed to investigate the general characteristics of the chemical composition of waters of the Araguaia floodplain, in this case ionic balance and classification of water bodies under study into general categories. The study was conducted on the Araguaia Plain (Tocantins). In each of the sources under study a collection point was placed where samples were taken for analysis of concentrations of major ions (Ca, Mg, Na, K, Cl, SO4, HCO3 ), dissolved organic carbon (COD) and dissolved inorganic carbon (CID). The interpretation of the data obtained showed that the values of the concentrations of most elements analyzed were statistically similar between the Javaés and Araguaia rivers during the rainy season. However, during the dry period, when there is no influence of bioleaching processes, the concentrations were statistically different. This behavior indicates that the terms of use and occupation developed in the area of influence of the river Javaés currently do not show changes in the studied region. It was also found that the biogeochemistry of lake Chave is significantly influenced by its connection with the seasonal river Javaés, which indicates that the occurrence of changes in the waters of this river may disturb the lentic environments of the region. This study evaluated the environmental conditions of the Curva Sao Paulo bathing place, located in Poti river, at Teresina city, Piaui, Brazil. A monitoring program of water quality was carried out between June 2009 to October 2010, through the faecal coliform, turbidity, pH, and temperature. The results indicated that the place presented a satisfactory condition for bathing in 90% of the monitored period. This favorable scenario is due to the low level of urban occupation at the upstream of the resort. Restrictions on recreational use occur during the rainy season (December-May), which was attributed to diffuse pollution. In order to provide greater health security to the swimmers and encourage recreation in the study area, it is proposed to the establishment a monitoring program of balneability.
