A review of altmetrics as an emerging discipline for research evaluation

Carlos Luis González-Valiente; Josmel Pacheco-Mendoza; Ricardo Arencibia-Jorge

This article analyses the scientific production of publications on altmetrics as an emergent discipline for research evaluation. The research objective was to identify the investigative tendencies that characterize the subject. The analysis studied documents indexed by Web of Science and Scopus databases. About 253 documents were retrieved, showing a growth in articles 2005–2015. We discovered that the most productive authors, journals, institutions, and countries were from Europe and North America. The collaboration networks between authors and institutions reveal a homogenous community formed by the most prolific contributors. The most explored subjects deal with (1) social media and networking, (2) internet, (3) scholarly and scientific communication and publication, (4) open access and public libraries, (5) citation analysis, (6) impact factor measurements, (7) metric disciplines, (8) information analysis, retrieval, and processing, (9) search engines and data bases, and (10) evaluative bibliometrics. We discovered a nucleus of contributors who have attempted to solidify the knowledge area, with emerging principles of high theoretical consistency.

Methods: substantiation was provided for conceptual notions about INFOLIT in the field of library and information sciences, and some interesting research antecedents were explored. Sixty-seven papers identified by the Ibero-America-Cuba INFOLIT Wiki-Repository were examined with the bibliometric indicators yearly productivity, authors, journals and term co-occurrence analysis, as well as type of documents cited, and most commonly cited journals and authors. Bibliometric maps and graphs were used to present the results obtained. Results: the topic has expanded since 2007. The most outstanding authors were from health and higher education institutions. The most productive journals were from the area of Library Science and Information Sciences in Cuba. Four basic research lines were found: 1) INFOLIT in medical and health sciences, 2) information competences among university students, 3) INFOLIT evaluation and 4) design of INFOLIT syllabuses. The most commonly cited journals were ACIMED, Anales de Documentacion, Boletin de la Asociacion Andaluza de Bibliotecarios, The Journal of Academic Librarianship and Ciencias de la Informacion. Overseas authors were more commonly cited. Conclusions: the study shed light on the main Cuban patterns for research on INFOLIT, a matter not examined previously, paving the way for the development of the topic in library and information sciences...(AU)

Rethinking the information dimension of marketing

Carlos Luis González-Valiente; Josmel Pacheco-Mendoza

This article discusses the information dimension of marketing from a technical, theoretical and behavioral perspective. It also comments the relationship between marketing and the library and information science (LIS). It is an exploratory and descriptive study and its qualitative approaches are carried out through classic documentary analysis. From the technical perspective, it addresses the presence of information in all marketing management processes, from market research to the final preparation of the marketing plan. From the theoretical perspective, it addresses the frameworks for marketing information processing, the influence of the information value theory and the application of techniques from dissimilar areas of study to analyze the information. From the behavioral perspective, it shows empirical evidence of human information behavior of marketing managers and other actors, based on cognitive and social viewpoints. Regarding disciplinary relations, marketing and LIS share theories related to information behavior, information management, and systems analysis and design. The marketing approaches is more noticeable on LIS studies than LIS approaches on marketing studies, considering the analysed literature. Information, as a link between both disciplines, makes way to delve into new research, academic and practical scenarios.

Carlos Luis González-Valiente

This paper presents a citation analysis of Internext - Review of International Business to detect the impact caused by papers published for the period 2006-2013. The Publish or Perish (PoP) software is used, which retrieves articles and citations from Google Scholar database. As part of the applied indicators are: the distribution of authors by articles, citations per year, citation vs. self-citation, journal’s citable vs. non citable documents, journal’s cited vs. uncited documents, co-word analysis, and H Index. A total of 131 articles were obtained for 153 citations made until June, 2014. Most articles present multiple authorship. It is also detected an ascending line in the citation. The Journal has very low levels of self-citation, showing that most citing sources are Brazilian journals. The most cited articles have been published in the early years (2006-2008); whose main topics are related with the internationalization theory and strategy, the transaction analysis, and the corporate governance. The InternexT’ H Index is 6 and the G Index is 9.

Palabras ilave : America Latina. Disciplinas informativas. Indicadores bibliometricos. Latindex. Marketing . Producao cientifica. Tendencias de investigacion.
