Purpose – This paper aims to carry out an in‐depth exploration of early retirement processes from a psychosocial perspective, identifying factors that play a relevant role in decisions for leaving work as well as variables involved in retirement adjustment and possible outcomes for retirees.Design/methodology/approach – Qualitative data from nine focus groups – made up of a total of 78 Spanish early retirees from different sectors of activity (industry, bank/financial services and telecommunications) – were codified and analyzed using the ATLAS.ti 5 program.Findings – The study highlights the relevance of how organizational exit is carried out (voluntariness, perception of justice, etc.) in relation to the adjustment to retirement. The degree to which the labor market exit implies different types of rupture (psychological contract, identity, professional and personal objectives, way of life, etc.) conditions the adaptation to post‐working life. Participation and normalization of people with disabilities in the labor market are related to factors external to the organization as the legal, financial or occupational contexts, as well as factors related to people management in companies: organizational culture, HRM policies and practices, supervision and leadership styles and co-workers relationships. This paper aims to review the main psychosocial factors related to access, integration and performance of people with disabilities in organizations and their implications for wellbeing, occupational health and quality of work life of this colective. Based on the theoretical model proposed by Stone and Colella 1 we analyze the research findings about macro-organizational and interpersonal factors and their relations to psychosocial risks and their prevention. Finally, we offer a set of conclusions and proposals for intervention and future research aimed at improving the occupational health of workers with disabilities.

After a long period of scarce resources and a long delay in new scientific results suffered as a consequence of recent Spanish history, research concerning groups has experienced a rapid development over the last 15 years of the 20th century—the result of the late but then clear institutionalization of psychology into university structure. Although most research has been carried out at the very heart of social psychology and along the traditional lines of the field, a significant growth in the study of groups and work teams in organizational contexts can now be highlighted, coinciding with the tendency detected internationally during the last years. Beyond the normalization of group research in Spain, it is necessary to point out its excessive dependency in both theory and methodology on models and tools elaborated throughout North America and Europe.
