Comparative evaluation of multilingual information access systems

We describe the overall organization of the CLEF 2003 evaluation campaign, with a particular focus on the cross-language ad hoc and domainspecific retrieval tracks. The paper discusses the evaluation approach adopted, describes the tracks and tasks offered and the test collections used, and provides an outline of the guidelines given to the participants. It concludes with an overview of the techniques employed for results calculation and analysis for the monolingual, bilingual and multilingual and GIRT tasks.

ENSM-SE at CLEF 2006 : Fuzzy Proximity Method with an Adhoc Influence Function in Evaluation of Multilingual and Multi-modal Information Retrieval 7th Workshop of the Cross-Language Evaluation Forum, CLEF 2006, Alicante, Spain

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed postproceedings of the 7th Workshop of the Cross-Language Evaluation Forum, CLEF 2006, held in Alicante, Spain, September 2006. The revised papers presented together with an introduction were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. The papers are organized in topical sections on Multilingual Textual Document Retrieval, Domain-Specifig Information Retrieval, i-CLEF, QA@CLEF, ImageCLEF, CLSR, WebCLEF and GeoCLEF.We experiment a new influence function in our information retrieval method that uses the degree of fuzzy proximity of key terms in a document to compute the relevance of the document to the query. The model is based on the idea that the closer the query terms in a document are to each other the more relevant the document. Our model handles Boolean queries but, contrary to the traditional extensions of the basic Boolean information retrieval model, does not use a proximity operator explicitly. A single parameter makes it possible to control the proximity degree required. To improve our system we use a stemming algorithm before indexing, we take a specific influence function and we merge fuzzy proximity result lists built with different width of influence function. We explain how we construct the queries and report the results of our experiments in the ad-hoc monolingual French task of the CLEF 2006 evaluation campaign.

Evaluation of digital libraries

Digital libraries (DLs) are new and innovative information systems, under constant development and change, and therefore evaluation is of critical importance to ensure not only their correct evolution but also their acceptance by the user and application communities. The Evaluation activity of the DELOS Network of Excellence has performed a large-scale survey of current DL evaluation activities. This study has resulted in a description of the state of the art in the field, which is presented in this paper. The paper also proposes a new framework for the evaluation of DLs, as well as for recording, describing and analyzing the related research field. The framework includes a methodology for the classification of current evaluation procedures. The objective is to provide a set of flexible and adaptable guidelines for DL evaluation.

Cross-Language Evaluation Forum: Objectives, Results, Achievements

The Cross-Language Evaluation Forum (CLEF) is now in its fourth year of activity. We summarize the main lessons learned during this period, outline the state-of-the-art of the research reported in the CLEF experiments and discuss the contribution that this initiative has made to research and development in the multilingual information access domain. We also make proposals for future directions in system evaluation aimed at meeting emerging needs.

European Research Letter: cross-language system evaluation: the CLEF campaigns

The goals of the CLEF (Cross-Language Evaluation Forum) series of evaluation campaigns for information retrieval systems operating on European languages are described. The difficulties of organizing an activity which aims at an objective evaluation of systems running on and over a number of different languages are examined. The discussion includes an analysis of the first results and proposals for possible developments in the future.

Applying EuroWordNet to cross-language text retrieval

We discuss ways in which EuroWordNet (EWN) can be used in multilingual information retrieval activities, focusing on two approaches to Cross-Language Text Retrieval that use the EWN database as a large-scale multilingual semantic resource. The first approach indexes documents and queries in terms of the EuroWordNet Inter-Lingual-Index, thus turning term weighting and query/document matching into language-independent tasks. The second describes how the information in the EWN database could be integrated with a corpus-based technique, thus allowing retrieval of domain-specific terms that may not be present in our multilingual database. Our objective is to show the potential of EuroWordNet as a promising alternative to existing approaches to Cross-Language Text Retrieval.
