Iatrogenic Arteriovenous Fistula Following Endovenous Laser Therapy of the Short Saphenous Vein

Carolina Vaz; Arlindo Matos; João Oliveira; Clara Nogueira; Rui Almeida; Mergulhão Mendonça

Short saphenous vein incompetence is present in up to 20% of patients with varicose veins. Studies looking at the success and complication rates associated with endovenous laser ablation of the short saphenous vein included only a small number of patients. The authors report the case of a 51-year-old woman presenting with a painful right leg edema. She had a history of previous endovenous laser ablation of the right and left great saphenous veins and right short saphenous vein. Duplex scan was performed and showed an arteriovenous fistula between branches of the popliteal artery and vein. Surgical ligation of the fistula was performed. At 8-month follow-up, the patient remains asymptomatic.

Effect of continuous sugar-cane cultivation on physical soil properties of a Dark Red Latosol

J.C.M. de Oliveira; Carolina Vaz; Klaus Reichardt

With the objetive of studying soil physical characteristics of a dark red latosol under long term cultivation of sugar-cane monoculture, the present paper evaluated soil particle size distributions, soil density and porosity of soil samples from plots cultivated for 16, 30 and 50 years to sugar-cane as compared with soil samples from natural rain-forest. Results indicated significant changes in clay contents and soil density of the surface horizon, as a function of soil use. Changes were also observed in micro and macro porosities of these samples.

Iatrogenic Complications Following Laser Ablation of Varicose Veins

During the past decade, Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) has been introduced as a minimally invasive alternative to high ligation and open surgical stripping of the incompetent Great Saphenous Vein (GSV) or Short Saphenous Vein (SSV). There is great variability in EVLA protocols and at the present time there is data from more than 60 publications with more than 15000 EVLA treatments reporting good clinical results but also undesired side effects. Post-operative pain in the operated area is rated from slight to moderate by most patients (81, 5%),post-operative induration of the truncal vein can be expected in 78, 1% of patients and perivenous ecchymosis and hematoma are observed in an average of 52% of patients. Further complications such as persistent dysesthesia after nerve lesions (0, 8%) and burns on the skin (0, 2%) are reported in a minority of cases. Great care must be taken to ensure adequate tumescent anesthesia and light dosimetry in order to avoid post-operative paresthesia.

Atenuação da radiação gama no estudo da distribuição de partículas em solo sob floresta e cana-de-açúcar

J.C.M. de Oliveira; Klaus Reichardt; Carolina Vaz

The use of a new soil particle size distribution analysis methodology is presented in connection with the study of particle size distribution in soils covered by natural forest and sugar cane crop cultivated during 16, 30 and 50 years, continuously. The technique is based on the attenuation of a gamma-ray beam by a conventional soil/water suspension under sedimentation. Results show a significant difference in clay content for the upper soil layer as a function of sugar cane cultivation.
