Implementation of ISO17799 and BS7799 in picture archiving and communication system Local experience in implementation of BS7799 standard

Abstract In picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) [H.K. Huang, PACS: Basic Principles and Application, 1st ed., Wiley-Liss (1998); K.J. Dreyer, A. Mehta, J.H. Thrall, PACS: A Guide to the Digital Revolution, 1st ed., Springer Verlag (2001)], digital image data were stored and retrieved centrally. Clinicians and radiologists have the convenience of instant and simultaneous access to images and reports from multiple locations. In a filmless hospital [E.L. Siegel, R.M. Kolodner, Filmless Radiology, Reprint ed., Springer Verlag (2001)], with the availability of image servers, integrity of data and security of the system were the most important tasks during the design of a PACS. However, there is no single solution for the security of PACS. A comprehensive information security management system (ISMS) is required for the monitoring of the security of PACS. In this paper, the security of PACS is presented as a mechanism by which organization can manage and protect all information assets by ensuring data confidentiality, integrity and accessibility according to ISO17799 and BS7799 standards. Implementation of the ISMS involved system redesign, change of workflow, staff retraining, communication, social engineering and documentation control.

Governance of Picture Archiving and Communications Systems: Data Security and Quality Management of Filmless Radiology

Carrison K.S. Tong; Eric T.T. Wong

In the age of increasing reliance on data and the importance of sensitive information, applications and technologies have arisen to appropriately deal with assuring the security of medical informatics and healthcare administration functions. In order for technology to progress, new systems are being installed globally to address this issue. Governance of Picture Archiving and Communications Systems: Data Security and Quality Management of Filmless Radiology examines information security management systems for the facilitation of picture archiving and communication systems (PACS). This valuable contribution to data security and quality management literature provides a comprehensive guide for all aspects of the implementation of PACS for the enhancement of modern practices in radiology.

Common gateway interfacing and dynamic JPEG techniques for remote handheld medical image viewing

Carrison K.S. Tong; Kwok Kwan Chan; C.K Wong

Abstract In remote medical consultation, transfer of medical images such as Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance (MR) images were required. During the transfer, many technical problems including data integrity, accessibility, size of the data, compression method and bandwidth of linkage should be considered. A method of transferring medical image data using Common Gateway Interfacing and dynamic JPEG techniques from a hospital data centre to a handheld PocketPC through a mobile phone were presented in this paper. In the proposed method, many communication technologies such as WEB, SQL, DICOM, GSM, Bluetooth and JPEG compression were involved. The advantage of this method was that the clinical user has no geographic limitation in using the system. He could query the image server to get the required images using the handheld PocketPC at anywhere.
