Comportamiento discursivo de Bueno, Bien, Pues Bien

Catalina Fuentes Rodríguez

Bien, bueno and pues bien are three connective devices lexically related. Some of their uses are common for the three of them, particularly the conclusive one. However, being explanatory of the same sort is not common for these devices. Furthermore they differ both about the possibility of being used as expletive or discourse triggers (specifically in answers) and about the distinct semantic contents they add when linking.

EnglishThis study offers a proposal on discourse grammar from a pragmalinguistic point of view. From a communicative perspective it is necessary to describe analytical levels (micro, macro and superstructure) which are interconnected with fields emerging from discourse contextualization (argumentation, information, enunciation, modality). The author proposes, also, a revision of grammatical categories that must include macrostructural categories.

Pragmática y relación intratextual: el caso de hasta, incluso y ni siquiera

Catalina Fuentes Rodríguez

In our language there are several adverbs that behave in an unusual way. So, the ones that have been chosen are those that constitute a micro-system on the basis of their polar positive/negative opposition. They are syntagm modifiers but also add certain pragmatic or presuppositional features that contribute to the establishment of communicative cohesion. Thus, in order to find out their significative value, they have been analysed in connexion with the concepts assertion-presupposition. These elements point to others found in the text or the situational context of hearer and speaker. They also give cohesion to the text and establish a pragmatic connexion, at the same time as they seem to have a rhematic function in the text. Their field goes beyond, therefore, the sentence boundaries, so that it is necessary to analyse them textually. At the same time, all their formal variations are discussed, and distinguished from other functions of the same elements, which are then considered from a different view of the adverb class.

Nominal address and rapport management in informal interactions among university students in Quito (Ecuador), Santiago (Chile) and Seville (Spain)

María Elena Placencia; Catalina Fuentes Rodríguez; María Palma-Fahey

Abstract Nominal and pronominal address forms, which play a central role in the construction of interpersonal relations (cf. Bargiela et al. 2002; Clyne et al. 2009), have been the focus of attention in different linguistics subfields for several decades now. Less attention, however, has been paid to these forms from a variational pragmatics (Schneider and Barron 2008) perspective, particularly in Spanish. Using a corpus of role play interactions, we examine the impact of region and gender on nominal address usage among male and female university students from Quito (Ecuador), Santiago (Chile) and Seville (Spain). We look at how these forms are employed in rapport management (Spencer-Oatey 2008 [2000]) in two situations: giving advice and making a direct complaint (Boxer 1993). Building on work on nominal forms (cf. Leech 1999; McCarthy and O’Keeffe 2003), we examine similarities and differences in their use across the three varieties of Spanish. Among the findings recorded was a larger repertoire of nominal forms in the Santiago and Quito data sets relative to the Seville corpus, with the highest frequency of use in Santiago. We suggest that address usage in the dyadic contexts examined is connected to the expression of affect and involvement, with Chileans (Santiago) and Ecuadorians (Quito) displaying more affect than Spaniards (Seville). Contrary to early research suggesting that women employ more affiliative language than men (cf. Lakoff 1975), overall, males in the present study were found to use address forms more frequently than females across the three locations.

Marcadores Del Discurso Y Función Comentario

Catalina Fuentes Rodríguez

Comment is a pragmatic function where argumentation, enunciation, modality and information concur. It includes operators, connectives, and interclausal relations. Comment operators mark the evaluation of the speaker about the propositional content of the sentence. They appear like an afterthought which stresses the previous information. Among them there are three types: (a) grammaticalized adverbs of modality, which concern the subjectivity of the speaker, (b) operators with the verb decir, concerning the speech act, and (c) operators with an intensifier, marking the argumentative force of the assertion. The operators (b) and (c) are not completely grammaticalized. They may appear with que, y, or as a parenthetical. By using these operators, the speaker reinforces the previous arguments and places them in a high-scale position.

EL PRONOMBRE: DIMENSIÓN ENUNCIATIVA

Catalina Fuentes Rodríguez

The pronoun is one of the parts of speech which has been studied from different analytical standpoints. I have attempted to show that the pronoun is a unit whose meaning is esentially pragmatic, i.e. it has discoursive implications. At the syntactic level, it has a replacive function. It can substitute a noun, and adjective, and adverb, or a verb. It is a mechanism of the language-system at the textual level.

This article aims to politeness in Spanish question time. In these, the norm is the conflict, and the impoliteness is normal to the members of the opposition. The government has to protect their face and be collaborative. In these interactions, with a fixed structure, indirect forms are mixed to direct attacks. These attacks have different weight according to the politicians.

EnglishThe paper is a macrosyntactic study on the parenthetical constructions that interrupt the syntactic linearity by the conjunctions y, o. The methodology followed is pragmatic linguistics, that seeks to identify the discursive functions of these sentences and the scope of coordination. The analysis leads us to the conclusion that the presence of the conjunctions in the parentheticals obeys the need to mark some macroestructural relations: argumentative force (y) or reformulation (o).

Macrosintaxis y lingüística pragmática

Catalina Fuentes Rodríguez

Linguistic constructions higher than sentence are analyzed with models based on the structure of the clause, or from the speech acts theory, forgetting, and sometimes questioning, the existence of a syntax. In this paper we want to present a methodological alternative. We defend the existence of a syntax of units higher than the sentence (macrosyntax), which entails the study of the statement, its structure, relationships with others utterances and the higher units in which it is included, both in spoken and written language. The methodological approach, from our point of view, must integrate the componential model with a pragmatic approach, since we are talking about speech acts in a context and in an interactive environment. The presence of all these elements is codified in specific units of discourse as well as in structures and functions. We will apply the pragmalinguistic model already explained in Fuentes Rodriguez (2000) and show how this model can explain many of the problems in the macrosyntax and provides sufficient tools and criteria for the advancement of research.
