The Role of Internet of Things on the Development of Ports as a Holder in the Supply Chain

Mladen Jardas; Čedomir Dundović; Marko Gulić; Katarina Ivanić

The new technology greatly affects the way of production, consumption, communication, service delivery and ultimately on the entire supply chain. All stakeholders in the business process must invest in new knowledge and develop new business models to adapt to the changing business environment. Connecting devices over internet (Internet of things) and stakeholders’ synergy open up opportunities for new market achievements as well as for the improvement of business processes both in the supply chain and in ports. The development of information technologies has an impact on the reduction of errors, costs, time of information transfer and transport, inventory reduction and thus on better customization. There should be no weak links in the supply chain, which is especially related to the port and port processes that are the basis of the supply chain network. The port is the core of all activities of the supply chain and is also a place where supply and demand meet.

Model za određivanje konkurentnosti luka i prometnih pravaca

Mia Jurjević; Čedomir Dundović; Svjetlana Hess

Preliminary notes In order to determine seaports value on a particular geographic area, the research of ports is mainly focused on the performance measurement in accordance with the volume of traffic and productivity on a global scale. As links in the transport and logistics chain, ports are continuously adapting to the demands of customers in international trade to achieve an adequate level of competitiveness. It is necessary and indispensable for the ports of Trieste, Koper and Rijeka to cooperate and join their efforts regarding joint competition with the north-west European and the Black Sea ports. The major objective is to determine which one among the three observed North Adriatic ports, is the most competitive transit port for the selected points of destination in the hinterland, taking into consideration multiple types of cargo. In order to achieve the set objective, in this paper the collective competitiveness index is proposed.

A split task solution for quay crane scheduling problem in mid-size container terminals

Neven Grubišić; Čedomir Dundović; Srdjan Žuškin

A solution fo quay crane scheduling problem with unchanged number of cranes during container vessel handling process is explored to minimize a vessel handling time and optimize quay crane utilization. Targets are small and mid-size terminals where high reliability of forecasted scenario is requested by and split task algorithms ; in both cases grouping of tasks into clusters and operation zone limits are considered. Comparison of two models shows that split-task algorithm may improve crane utilization rate and vessel handling time in many cases. Proposed solutions combine existing research achievements with authors own approach in container terminal optimization development.

Influence of Port Policy on the Development of Croatian Container Ports

Čedomir Dundović; Neven Grubišić

It is important to consider the port development throughoutthe world from the aspect of economical, transport and portpolicy and their mutual impact on commerce and efficiency ofports. By examining such relations in the context of developmentof the Croatian container ports, it is possible to define reasonsfor lagging behind of Croatian ports compared to theworld movements. The main reason for the negative trend of development ofCroatian container ports lies in the non-existence of adequatemeasures of transport, maritime and port policy. Analysis ofstatistics over the past decade and comparison of structure andvolume of the general cargo traffic in the Rijeka port and theneighbouring ports in the area of North Adriatic are both showingsignificant size discrepancy and uncompetitiveness of theCroatian port. Disturbances that have brought to such a situationresult from inadequate port policy and non-harmonisedactivities between various modes of transport. In order to overcome such situation, the authors suggest determiningof clear tasks, goals and measures of the port policythat have to be undertaken so that the Croatian policy could becompatible with the main aspects, development tendencies andmeasures of theE U port policy.
