Anti-inflammatory activity of a methanol extract of the leaves of Vochysia ferruginea Mart. (Vochysiaceae) was determined in the rat paw edema test. At doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg, i.p., the extract reduced edema significantly (p < 0.01) compared with indomethacin (10 mg/kg). It also showed significant dose-dependent analgesic activity (0.3–100 mg/kg) in mice (p < 0.05), compared with acetaminophen (130 mg/kg), and inhibitory activity with cyclooxygenase (COX-1) (72% at 70 mg/ml), compared with indomethacin (2.3 mM). An ulcerogenic effect was observed when the extract was administered to rats.

A Preliminary Phytochemical and Pharmacologic Study of Antigonum leptopus Hook. & Arn

Mahabir P. Gupta; Ceferino Sánchez

AbstractWhile carrying out a phytochemical screening of alkaloids in Panamanian plants (1), the extract of Antigonum leptopus Hook. & Am. showed for the first time the presence of alkaloids. Since nothing was found in the literature reviewed on this plant, we undertook this preliminary study.Antigonum leptopus Hook. & Arn. is commonly known in Panama as “coral-vine”, coralito, enredadera, bellisima and cadena de amor. In Mexico, where it is supposed to have originated, it is called coronilla and chaclomacel. Other Central American names for this plant are confite, flor de San Miguel, San Diego, bellisima, colacion and confite rojo. It is interesting to note that it is cultivated in Florida, where it is called “confederate vine”. (2)
