Materials science is on the verge of a fundamental change of its research and development (R&D) methodology. High-throughput experimentation, combinatorial chemistry, and parallel synthesis have entered laboratories and promise a dramatic acceleration in the process of discovering and developing new products. Although Hanak had already devised the basic concepts in the 1970s [1], it took the leading example of the pharmaceutical industry and the pioneering work of Schultz and co-workers and Symyx Technologies to spark activities in almost all branches of materials science [2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13]. The combinatorial or high throughput screening approach to materials development involves four key steps.
