American Reform Efforts: German Professional Education after World War II

Im Vergleich zu den Bestrebungen der US‐Besatzer Deutschlands, das Schulwesen nach Kriegsende nicht nur zu entnazifizieren, sondern auch grundlegend zu reformieren, sind ahnliche Initiativen auf dem Niveau der akademischen Berufsausbildung an Universitaten und Technischen Hochschulen kaum erforscht worden. Diese Untersuchung weist weder bei verantwortlichen US‐Besatzungsgremien noch bei tonangebenden US‐Berufsverbanden oder ihrer Fachpresse irgendeinen starken Druck (Motivation?) nach, eine vermeintliche “illiberal education” an den Fakultaten zu bekampfen. Trotz Organisationsverbotes und Nichtheranziehung der gleichgeschalteten deutschen akademischen Berufsverbande “versaumten” die US‐Behorden auch deswegen die Chance, das Hochschulwesen grundlegend zu reformieren, weil akademische Ratgeber und professionelle Verbande der USA den Kern der akademischen Berufsausbildung, nachdem er einmal personell entnazifiziert worden war — weitgehend als solide (und zuverlassig) angesehen haben.

Some two decades ago, the subjects of most of the works under review herethe evolution of the education of girls and women, poor students, the socialreproductive function of education, a political history of a German university, or compulsory schooling as a preindustrial invention-would have appeared unusual or controversial. That such works now represent mainstream history (and will need to be read by historians outside of the narrower field of education history) says much about the usefulness of such new approaches. In the late 1960s, when the Shelby Cullom Davis Center at Princeton University decided to devote several years of interdisciplinary and international research to problems of the history of education, that field had consisted largely of studies of individual educational institutions, curriculum changes,
