celebrated novelist of the last two decades. The winner of several literary prizes in his home country, he has also garnered enthusiastic readers in France, Britain, the U.S., and Portugal. A professor, in fact, of Portuguese literature and an authority on the writings of the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935), Tabucchi has set a significant amount of his fiction both in Lisbon and in such former outposts of the Portuguese empire as the Azores, Angola, and Goa (though not, as yet, Brazil).
