Two new species of Ramichloridium-like hyphomycetes from senescent leaves of Night-scented Lily (Alocasia odora) in Taiwan

Roland Kirschner; Chee-Jen Chen

Two new species of dematiaceous hyphomycetes isolated from senescent leaves of Night-scented Lily, Alocasia odora (plant family: Araceae) are described based on light and scanning electron microscopy as well as LSU rDNA sequence analysis. One of these species observed directly on the leaves and in vitro is placed in genus Parastenella because of morphological characteristics. The other species characterized in vitro only is accommodated in the genus Ramichloridium. Molecular data indicate a close relationship of both species with Ramichloridium musae within the Mycosphaerellaceae (Capnodiales, Dothideomycetidae, Dothideomycetes).

Periconiella species (anamorphic Mycosphaerellaceae) from Taiwan

Roland Kirschner; Chee-Jen Chen

Three Periconiella species were collected in Taiwan and investigated with light and scanning electron microscopy and nuc LSU rDNA analysis. A new species of Periconiella is proposed for a hyphomycete with apically branched conidiophores and relationship to Mycosphaerellaceae found on living leaves of Machilus zuihoensis and an unidentified species of Lauraceae. Two further species, Periconiella lygodii and P. perseae-macranthae, are recorded outside India for the first time and on new host species. Hadrotrichum laurinum is transferred to Passalora.

Co-occurrence of Pseudocercospora species and rhytismatalean ascomycetes on maple and camellia in Taiwan

Roland Kirschner; Cheng-Lin Hou; Chee-Jen Chen

A new species of Pseudocercospora on leaves of Acer albopurpurascens, a maple endemic to Taiwan, is described. The fungus sporulated on leaf spots caused by Vladracula annuliformis (Rhytismatales). Pseudocercospora camelliicola and Coccomyces sinensis on leaves of Camellia cultivars are recorded for the first time for Taiwan and described and illustrated in detail. In contrast to the situation on maple, both fungal species on camellia caused conspicuous breakage of the epidermis during sporulation, which is discussed in connection with fungal succession during leaf litter decomposition.

New Reports of Two Hypophyllous Septobasidium Species from Taiwan

Roland Kirschner; Chee-Jen Chen

Two resupinate basidiomycetes associated with scale insects, Septobasidium humile and Septobasidium petchii, hitherto only known from Java and Sri Lanka are for the first time reported from Taiwan. Both species were collected on leaves of species of Lauraceae in the Fushan Botanical Garden, described and illustrated with drawings and photographs, and their host insects for the first time identified as members of the Diaspididae (Coccoidea). The specificity of Septobasidium species against diaspidid hosts is discussed with respect to the presumptive modes of nutrition of the Diaspididae known from literature.

Ovularia puerariae Sawada is the hyphomycetous anamorph of a new Marasmius species on living leaves of kudzu (Pueraria montana, Fabaceae)

Roland Kirschner; I-Shu Lee; Chee-Jen Chen

An arthroconidial hyphomycete on living leaves of kudzu (Pueraria montana, Fabaceae), originally described by Sawada in 1959 as Ovularia puerariae, was rediscovered. This anamorph is connected to an unknown Marasmius teleomorph belonging to section Globulares, which develops on the same living leaves. Ultrastructure and LSU rDNA sequence analysis of the anamorph confirm this connection. The fungus does not have only a unique biology among agarics, comparable only to Mycena citricolor, but also has the potential for application as a control agent of kudzu. During comparison with similar anamorph genera, Illosporium graminicola was found to be a synonym for Beniowskia sphaeroidea.

Two new species of the staurosporous hyphomycetous genera Ceratosporium and Diplocladiella from Taiwan

Roland Kirschner; Chee-Jen Chen

Ceratosporium verrucosum and Diplocladiella alta are described as new species. Ceratosporium verrucosum was found on a dead bamboo culm and D. alta on rotting wood in Taiwan. Compared with the other species of Ceratosporium, C. verrucosum differs by the verrucose ornamentation covering the arms of the conidia. Diplocladiella alta is easily distinguished by the length of its conidiophores. For comparison with the previously described species of Ceratosporium, type material of C. fasciculare first was reexamined and Bactrodesmium submoniliforme recognized as the correct name for this species.

Dictyochaeta multifimbriata, a new species from Taiwan

Roland Kirschner; Chee-Jen Chen

A new species of the dematiaceous hyphomycete genus Dictyochaeta was collected on a dead twig in Taiwan. It is characterised by solitary conidiophores and reniform, non-septate conidia with several setulae at each end. The species is compared with other species having non-septate, setulate conidia and is described as Dictyochaeta multifimbriata.

Physalacria corticola, P. stilboidea, and Stilbum vulgare, Three Sphaeropedunculate Basidiomycota New to Taiwan, with Notes on Stilbum erythrinae

Roland Kirschner; Chee-Jen Chen

Three saprotrophic species of Basidiomycota forming sphaeropedunculate basidiomata, Physalacria corticola, hitherto only known from Singapore, Physalacria stilboidea known from New Zealand and United Kingdom, and Stilbum vulgare, hitherto not recorded for Asia, were found on dead branches and leaves in Taiwan. These species are described and illustrated in detail. Based on type study of Stilbum erythrinae Hansf., this species is tentatively transferred to Chionosphaera.

Three New Records of Auriculariales from Taiwan

Roland Kirschner; Chee-Jen Chen

Basidiodendron deminutum, B. eyrei, and Myxarium grilletii, three species common in America and Europe, are newly recorded for Taiwan. Descriptions and line drawings of the characteristics of these species are provided.
