Development of the Greening of Industrial Firms in the Cities along Taihu Lake: A Case Study in Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province

Abstract Under the globalization, the coastal China becomes a hot area of the international manufacturing investment due to its priority location, excellent environment, lower labor and land costs, etc. However, the fast industrialization has aroused the great demolishment to the local ecological environment. For example, the heavy water eutrophication in Taihu Lake has affected the source of drinking water for the cities around the lake. Anyway, in order to keep the economic increase and reduce the resource expense and pollution at the same time, it is necessary to encourage the greening of industrial enterprises actively for sustainable development. On the basis of the investigation of industrial enterprises in Wuxi city within Taihu Basin, the relatively developed region in coastal China, this paper analyzed the development process of green industry. This article concluded that governmental principal is the main pressure for enterprises to protect environment while the market factor plays a part role. Moreover, enterprises in the high technology development zone work better in environmental protection than those in the villages and towns, while the large enterprises work better than those small enterprises.

Development of the greening of industry firms in Taihu Basin: a case study in Wuxi

The rapid industrialization in Taihu Basin has aroused the great demolishment to the local ecological environment. So, it is necessary to encourage the greening of industry firms actively for the regional sustainable development. Based on the investigation of industrial firms and the environmental statistical data in Wuxi city within Taihu Basin, this paper analyzed the process of greening of industry. Some conclusions are inferable that under (he environmental press, the rate of pollution industry has declined and the environmental behavior of firms became friendly. Now governmental regulations are the main pressure to drive firms to take the environmental protection actions while the market factor plays the part role. The research also found that the firm environmental behavior has an important relationship with size, ownership, and location. The more massive enterprises, the better their environmental behavior. The environmental behavior of state and collective enterprises are better than those of foreign investment and private enterprises. The phase of industry greening of Wuxi is in initial stages. We need to guide and supervise the environmental behaviors of industry firms and promote the development of the greening of Industry firms.
